DEATH NOl TO BE FEARED.
Investigation of (he Phenomena .4ttend<
lug the ( losing <»f I.lie.
jlVniorest’s Monthly.>
Dr. U. L. l'winlslcy, a medical expert,
has been ifiviux to the public the latest iu
vcsiigulio.i by physicians respecting tU«
jihenumeua atteudiag ihu closiug of life,
it seems lliat while there is a natural
dread of death ou the jiart of all sane and
wholesome people, there is no -itch re
pugnance among those whose end is near.
The function ol dying is negative; we iall
to pieces like a \owor. The organic,
chemical changes are not only natural,
but are accompanied by a s use of relief
and eve,i of pleasure The criteria of
dcaih are iK’iug saiisr.ed, met the process
it consummated when th- extinction if
sensibility prevail a. the ultimate ilia
ments. I >uring the progress of this dis
solution of the uerve force, this t rooping
oil of i he numbness of death, the individual
is rapidly passing into a condition of re
pose, and, instead of torture or pangs, a
degree of self-satisfaction oft approaching
to enthusiasm is realized.
The seusations peculiar to the therapeu
tical operation of opium, hashish, ether,
etc . are not improbably akin to the men
tal activities of the dying. Tarring the
hallucinations experienced iu the stupor
as it gains on the suh ect, the moribund is
familiar wild naught that borders on suf
fering. This carbonic ceil has poisoned
or narcotised the several ganglia, aud re-
Ilex productions are interdicted. A con
summate analgesia prevails lii short,
the notion of pain is forhidmm the instant
that any stimulus fails to excite a response.
The condition to this irritability is that
the nerve center and track are sound, it
this vigor vanishes, reiiex phenomena are
at an end, and sutlerung, physiologically
speaking, is impossible, because of the ar
rest of the function of the sympathetic.
I nder these conditions there is no
physical or mental recoil from death. Hr.
William Hunter was sorry he was unable
to write "how easy aud delightful it is to
die. ” Dr holaaider, the traveler, was sc
delighted with sensations of excess in cold
that he was the tirst to tie down in the
slow to realize the luxury of such a death.
1 r, Burney tried hard to resist the etlorts
made to resuscitate him from drowning,
so bewitched was he by his prolonged
i s umlier. Infants die as serenely as they
breathe, and though hanging is the most
cruel form of death, save crucifixion, yet
after the tirst agony from strangulation,
hallucinations rapidly follow that are in
tensely pleasurable. Death means resl
and rebel from Suffering, its chief terroi
to the well is in what may follow in tin
long and lonely night which comes aftei
dissolution.

During the boyhood of the poet Her
anger, a plate as stable boy was providec
for him by a pious old aunt at Peronne,
hut he was soon sent to her house in dis
grace, having neglected his horse to reaC
x oltaire. It was a sultry summer day,
nor had he received a tithe, of the scolding
in store for him, ere the coming
up of a thunder-storm sent off tin
old lady to sprinkle her house with holt
water, to ward off the lightning. The
culprit stood at the door to enjoy tin
scene, and the electric tiuid striking i
tree hard by, tie was felled to the llopr by
the shook. Coming to his senses, Jn
cried out to his aunt, who was telling her
pater uosters on her knees by his side,
“Well, what is your holy' water gooc
for?” The horror strickeu devotee turned
him out of doors on the spot, and when u
few days afterward he entered d. I.aisue i
printing office, all good boys in I’ermine
had been told to shun him, as incorrigibly
wicked.

Wife's Suit fur Alimony.
Toucdo, 0., Jan. iJU. JiFige Pike’A court
room waa thronged by curious persons wbo
came to listen to the celebrated ca»e of Lillie
Taylor v* Rowain Taylor, for alimony. Mrs.
Taylor, a curly-baired beauty of twenty-four,
accompanied by her four-year-old »on, wan
the center of attraction. Her »tory, unin
cumbered by legal phraaea, wai as follows:
Bbe was a poor girl, earning her living by
sewing at Maumee, when, in 1879, she met
Rowain Taylor, the eon of wealthy and aris
tocratic parents They fell in love with each
other, and were soon engaged. He proposed
a secret marriage, claiming his father would
disinherit him if he knew he had married one
so far beneath him in social position. To this
she consented, an 1 Sunday night, October ft,
1879, they took the train at Toledo
and went to Adrian (that is what he
told her). A hack was found in waiting, and,
after an hour’s nde, they came to a
Baptist clergyman’s residence (as he said),
and were married in the presence of the wife
and child of the alieged preacher, who gave
Mrs. Taylor a certificate of marriage. Bhe
was introduced to the preacher aa Mr. Pike,
Thenewly-m&rried couple returned to Toledo.
In order not to give her husband away she
gave him her marriage certificate, and re
mained at her work as domestic. In Febru
ary, 1880, he left her in a delicate condition,
without money, been use sbe refuse*! to go
away and have an abortion performed. Since
then she has seen him but once, and that he
had never contributed a cent since their mar
riage to support herself or child.
She exhibits two letters in which he re
quests her to keep the »ecret of his marriage.
Taylor denie* be was ever married to defend
ant, and claims the letters are forgeries. The
sensational and unexpected creeps out at
every corner of the case, and produces the
wildest interest of any case tried for months.
