The Chattanooga Times says that
there is an extraordinary blockade of
freight on the Memphis and Charles

Georgia railroads, due to the unutual
movement of grain from the West.
It understands that there are now no
less than 400 loaded cars along the

East Tennessee yard.

A TALK WITH JEEFhR .CN DAVIS
His Visit to New Or'sans and His
Views of Public Men.
Jefferson Davis, ns Is well known,
accompanied the Philadelphia tarty
with the L'b-rty Bell to N-<w Oriesns,
and during the ride to tbe city the
Baltimore Sun correspondent had an
agreeable oust with him. Hie mind
Is clear and still active, but there are
signs of phv-dcrl break upin bls ap
pearance. H« is 78 years old, having
been born in Kentucky in June, 1808.
He is very severe on Gen. Snertuau,
and will in a abort time present to
the public an article on the subject,
winch is expectt d o be a v- rv vigor

but in justice to his (Mr. D.tvis'
friends a d the cause he represented
be will shortly give to tbe public a
complete vindication of bis course
while serving as President ol
the Confederacy. Mr. Davie says
Gen. Sherman has not furnished anv
proof to support hie accusation that
ho (Dtvls) contemplated the estab
lishment of despotic power tn tbe
South during tbe war. and denies in
tbe most emphatic terms that he ever
wrote a letter upou which such an
accilß'dton can b« rounded. Most
persons,and Gen. Sherman included,
are laboring under tbe impiessi n
that Mr. Dtvis lost, or bad captured
or stolen from blm during the late
unpleasantness, all of bis private pa
pers, letters, etc , but this is not the
case. Mr. Davis informed tbecorres
pondent that be has tn blspoesesM-.n
copies of all tbe letters be wrote dur
ing the war; Including 01s messages.
TUnfe valuable records were eav.d
for him by a Catholic priest, who re
covered and hid them for him until
ester bis release from prison. Mr.
Divis’answer to the charge of Gen.
Sherman will contain several extracts
from them.
Go b iug asked who was the great
est man be < v.-r met in public life
Mr. Davis answered.
‘•J >nn C. Oittr uu. He waia noble
genial, warm hearted gentleman
withal. G n. Jackson was a greater
man. if we judge nv results, but bt
