Canada as a Winter Resort,
•W . George Beers hi The Cent ary.]
How shall a hope to describe what has
been done to make Canada as a winter
res at better known to all the world.' 'I he
first snowball is an itiioxicant. Boys go
snow-mad. Montreal has a temporary in
sanity. The li ills,.sure prepared lor a visit
from Ling North Wind, and (.anndians
are the only people in the world who
know how to kei p warm outdoors as well
as indoors. The streets are gay with life
and laughter, and everybody seems deter
mined to make the most of the great car
nival. Business goes to the dogs There
is a might! march of tourists and towns
people eran. hing over the crisp snow, and
a constant jingle of sleigh h Us. If you
go to any of the toboggan slides, you will
witness a sight that turills the on looker
as well as the toboggauist. The natural
hills were formerly the only resort: but
some one has introduced the Russian idea
of erecting a high wooden structure, up
one side of which you urag your tobog
gan, and down the other side of which
you tly like a rocket. These artid. ial
sliil. s are Ihe most popular, as they are
easier ot ascent, aud can be made so as to
avoiiie Ciiliot-. or bumps.
V ilhiti the last tew years a score of
regular toboggan ciubs have been organ
ized. Everybody has gone crazy on the
subject, anil men, women, amt children
re ci in the dashing night. The hills are
lit by torches stuck in the snow
on each side of the truck, and huge bon
files are kept burn ng. around which gath
ers pi<:uresiiue groups, i’erbapsof all
.spurts of the carnival this is the most gen
erallv eu o nil by the visitors. Pome of
tile sii les are very sleep) and look danger
ous, aud the sensation of rushing down
the hill on tie thin strip of basswood is
one never to be lurgotleu.
"liowd.d you like it?” asked a 4’ada

she had steered down t he steepest slide

Anecdote of Senator Sum ier.
