HITHERTO.
[Margaret Saugster.]
To bluest sk. 's that arch tue way
I lift niv thankful eyes t '-day.
The sunlight fall , a golden tide,
O’er airy i’orests, green and wide;
Pure . dors drift the morning trough,
And God h is led me hitherto.
Sweet flower-perfumes thrill tiie air,
As if from oen-er swung at prayer;
And weeter fragrance tills my life
With all my Father’s goodness rife;
He gives me rose- af'or rue,
An I He has kept me hitherto.
What j >y to take His guiding hand.
To trust, if not to under taud—
To r ■ t thr mgh change and toil and tears
On Him, whose grand eternal years
In every living youth are new.
And er_>, ' ll.' leads me hitherto.’’
The Hattie ot Shiloh.
[Mt, Verhon dlls. i Cor. Globe-Democrat.}
It seems to me that 1 have one more
ray of light to throw on this sub'eel *\.
few juu ugo. as m> friend i apt. Jo
i.aur was coming up the < 'entral from
( uiro. In- noticed a very respeclabie look
ing negro in the seat behind him. and
opened up a conversation. It soon came
out that the man once lived near the ceie
brated battie ground, and, as the captain
had been in the fight, they both had much
to tell. The negro said that iu ltsd2 he
belonged to dr. C'heHy, who lived at : a
vannah. < berry was F-. strong In ion man,
and Gen. Gra d had his headquarters at
bis house One night Gem Grant told
his ad iitant to let ten. Buell
know that there was no oc
casion for him to rush his men, as
it would lie a week before they would be
ready to march to t'orinth, and in the
meantime little would be done Mrs.
l herry overheard this, and she w T as a
rebel—not to Grant, but to everybody else.
So she quietly went to the kiteheu, wrote
a note to Beauregard, and told the negro
what it was and what he should do with
it. So he got a h irse, passed the lines,
shot through the darkness to Beauregard's
headquarters, and put the note in the gen
eral's baud. Everything began torustie,
Beauregard rushed toward Pittsburg
Landing, and—we have all read the rest
of the story.
“My friend ( apt. Laur, of the I nion
army’and my other neighbor here who
fought on the other side think this negro's
story the best key they have found to the
Shiloh riddle. ”
Watching the Incuba-orM«
(New York Tifliune.
One of the interesting things at the
fanciers’ show is to wat< h the incubators.
The machines have glass fronts so that
the process of bat hing can lie watched
by every one who is curious. An egg
will be lying as white and sm oth as if it
were just going to be boiled for break
fast, when suddenly a little hole will ap
pear in it and a diminutive bill will be
seen j eekiug awa-, trying to enlarge it
'Then some of the d< wny little chickens
that have lieen sitting around gossiping
with each other, will become interested
and run over to take a hand. The amount
of sport they have with the poor, im
prisoned biped in that egg is in
credible. ivi ry time he moves they
will dart their bills at him and scare
him so that he withdraws into his
shell and resolves to become an egg again
and see l ie in the lorm id' a bam omelet
Then tin frolieksome • hickc.is will pre
tend to e ■ away, but as soon ns the un
hatched chicken moves they are at him
again.
When they tire of the sport they go
away and L ava the chicken to be hutched
in peace. ’The holo iu the shell grows
larger and larger and finally a head and
neck, covered with what looks like
coarse, scant hair, are thrust out. Then a
kicking and scrambling takes plac on the
part ot the chicken to free himself from
his shell. Every now and then lie will
pause, and lie supinely for awhile, ex
hausted by his efforts Finally he is free,
and in n few hours is a fluffy, lively little
“chick. "

According to the I'aria Gaulois an a[v
paratus has just been interned which
is siuipy astounding, for with it the
traveler need no longer fear any acci
dents, cafeiy will be assured on rail
roads. This apparatus permits the cm
ploye charged with the duty to sec m a
mirror tiie entire section of the road he is
to control with all the trains iu
motion, and he knows at every instant
just exactly where each train is.
When one of them approaehjes
another it a distance which
is daugerou-, he can immediately signal
the menaced train. The apparatus con
sista of a sheet of opaque glass, on which
the rails are indicated by horizontal lines
and the stations by vertical ones num
bered. Little arrows, representing, Hie
trains, move along the horizontal lines.
They are put in motion by aid of elec
tricity developed by contact of metallic
brushes a tacked to the locomotive with
zinc bands placed along the rails. The
train thus continually traces its trajectory
on the glass indicator. The apparatus
was exhibited some days ago in Germany
to a commission of Berlin scientists.
Consolation Th»t Didn’nt Console.
[Bob Burdette.;
My friend, A. C. Beeson, of Winches
ter, Ind., was, a few years ago, director
of the state prison at Michigan City, Ind.
To him, among many others, came a con
vict, not once, but often, complaining
that he was an innocent man most un
justly held in confinement. To all these
complainings Beeson had one unvarying
consolation. “ 'h. yes,” he would say,
in his goodmatured way, “I know you
are all right; you are an honest man; you
should not be in hera But then just
think of a l the fellows outside who ought
to be in here and ain’t ” And you know
this used to comfort the poor innocent
convict, and he’d go back to his cell, con
tented as a martyr, and think over it all
night and wonder in the morning why it
didn’t seem so satisfactory to him as it did
the night before
Growth of the Opium Habit.
(Boston Heral l 1
The opium habit is growing more ex
tensive every day. Two score years ago
only 30,000 pounds of opium were im
ported into this country. During the
past year the importation exceeded
1,7.)0,000 pounds. This rapid increase in
importation tells its own story.
The World’s Seven Bibles.
The seven Bibles of the world are the
Koran of the Mohammedans, the Tri
I’itikes of the Buddhists, the Five Kings
of tue c hinese, the three ’ edas of the
Hindoos, the Zenda vesta ad the Scrip
tures of the i hrisliana The Koran is the
most recent of them, dat.ng about the
seventh'century after Christ.
Earth Vibration.
Accord! g to a French authority, the
vibration caused by a moving railway
train a mile distant may make the use of
delicate astronomical instruments impossi
ble for the time being.
imnger from Arnica.
In The Keceuil de Medici ne \ eterin.
tire Dr. Cagny calls attention to the in
discriminate use of the tincture of arnica
for horses. He says that it is often em
ployed in considerable quantities for
petty strains and bruises, and is kept in
contact with the affected surfaces until
they are swollen, heated, aid olten blis
tered, thus greatly aggravating the orig
inal trouble He also cites cases in which
erysipelas has been induced in men from
an overdose of this irritating remedy.
Detectives at Work.
'Boston Post.]
An English writer says Beatrice Cenci
was a vile murderess. As this informs,
tion comes about 300 years after her
death, it is supposed that detectives have
been at work on the case.
