Pretty Maiden's Fissthue.
Hartford, Conn.. Feb. 26.—E. Emory
Johnson is one of the wealthiest gentlemen in
the pretty village of Moodus, in the lower
Connecticut valley. He is manager of an
extensive twino factory, and a gentleman of
culture a l travel. The pi (de ot his life is a
pretty dan ;ht< r of seventeen, with a good
face and figure, and, it is reported, $7.5,000 in
her own right. The village beaux naturally
sought her favor.
The extended illness of her mother ha? pre
vented projier watch upon her movements,
and it has only recently been discovered that
her affections were fixed upon a son of Dr.
Harris, the village physician. He is an un
couth boy, and he worked in Johnson’s fac
tory. Johnson tried to separate the couple,
and finally discharged Harria
Lately Johnson has missed many house
hold artich*. and a detective has just found
them in Harris’ possession. The boy con
fessed stealing them, and said ho and Miss
Johnson intended to eb«pc as hihhi as her
mother, who is in feenle health, died. John

WEST SHORE TALK.
The Various Rumor* ami Reports are Most
Emphatically Denied.
New York. Feb. 26 —-Judge Houston, one
of the receivers of the West Shore railroad,
said that if thore was any foundation for the
report that Mr. Vanderbilt is trying to buy
up the West Shore roud he would l»e likely
to know it. As it was, he hail no knowledge
that Mr. Vanderbilt intended anj' thing of the
sort.
“If Mr. Vanderbilt were making a move to
obtain control of the West Shorn,” ho re
plied, “I do not seo how the receivers can fail
to be aware of it.”
Mr. S. V. White was asked if there was any
truth in either rumor. lie replied: “I have
no knowledge in the world about either.”
“The sama old story,” said an offi of the
Pullman Palace Car Comjwiny, when the mat
ter was brought to his attention. “The re
port that the interests of the Pullman and
Wagner companies are to lx? harmonized,” ho
added, “is odd also. We know nothing
about it here. All our knowledge of the mat
ter is obtained from the newspapers. If there
were any tmth in it we should of course know
all about it.”
Criminal Carelessness.
Chebanse, 111., Feb. 26.—The midnight
train for Now Orleans on the Illinois Central
railroad was ran into from the rear by a
freight train. The two rear sleepers were do
molished. One man, Mr. Mclnnis, was in
stantly killed. Eight others were injured.
Mr. Brown, of lowa, and Mr. Brown, an in
surance adjuster of Chicago, and a colored
norter, had their hands and feet badly scalded.

said the danger liahta on the rear of the pas
senger train hail been allowed to go out. The
engineer of the freight train saw the danger
too late to avert a disaster, but reversed his
engine and succeeded in escaping by jumping.

Yeshurun, Dfcyton, 0., have elected Rabbi
Banger, ot Macm, Ga., to their pastorate.
The sentence of the Swaim court martial,
as approved by the president, is suspension
from rank, duty and pay for twelve years.
Charles Pad i n k. an engineer on the N. Y.,
P. and 0., was run over by an engine at
Youngstown, 0., and died of the injuries re
ceived.
The supreme court of Ohio affirmed the
vahdity of the statute under which the sav
ings and tean institutions of Ohio carry on
business.
An express train on the Ohio and Missis
sippi railroad collided with a switch engine
at Storrs station. The engines were wrecked,
but only one person seriously injured.
A suit has been brought in the United States
Court at Chicago u> test the

forbids railway companies transporting liquors
into or through the state.
The general ministerial association adopted
a resolution by which the members pledge
themselves nut to marry any persons who

A Cincinnati girl named Emma Gashat was
persuaded by one Lillie Cook to accompany
her to Louisville to seek employment. Upon
arriving in Louisville Miss Gashat was de

been dismissed from the New York custom

retary McCulloch will take measures to adopt
certain suggestions of the committee to pre

The “Independent Citizens’ Association of
the State of Ne w York” has been organized
in New York City, its object being to bring
together the different political organizations,
so that they may work as a unit toward the
nominal ion and election of the best men to
office, and to correct the Sunday evils.
