OFF FOR EUROPE.
Ex-Benator Dorsey. Col. Bob Ingersoll and
Their Future Prospects.
[lVashington Lotte'. I
Ex-Senator Dorsey, Col. 'ngersoll and
two other gentlemen were enjoying some
JO-cent cigars in one ot the best' rooms at
Weicker’s hotel, when the door opened
ind ex-Congressman John B. Alley en
tered. “The board of directors of the
Paola-Blanco Cattle company” was then
ready to begin business. Senator Dorsey,
whose beard shows only the faintest touch
»f gray, wore a black silk skull-cap, and
Ingersoll s face was as child-like, chubby
»nd beaming as ever. The meeting was
of more than ordinary importance, for the
protits of the year were to be discussed
tnd arrangements Concluded whereby at
least two of the directors could take an
extended tour abroad.
With a smile of supreme satisfaction
the company received the information
that the protits for the last year to be dis
tributed were fcbOU.OOO. Mr. Alley was
elected president, Mr. Dorsey vice presi
lent and manager, and Col. Ingersoll sec
retary. These minor matters disposed of,
Sov. Hadley, of Arkansas, who has
charge of,beuator Dorsey's private ranch,
was made acting manager of the whole
property. “Now, we can go to Europe, ”
taid Dorsey to Ingersoll, whereupon the
latter nodded a seraphic assent.
“Dorsey’s ranch” is beyond doubt the
largest in the I nited States, and combines
seventy eight ranches, which were bought
In. with all their property and cattle, at
one fell swoop. It is 60xS0 miles in ex
tent (covering an area of 5,400 square
miles;, and lies in the heart of Colfax
county, in the northeastern corner of New
Mexico. Although capitalized at $2,000.-
JOO. the property has increased so fast in
value that it is now believed to represent
st least twice that amount
To give some idea of the productiveness
of the ranch it may be stated that it
•hipped last year 10.622 beeves, the largest
number ever shipped from one ranch in
the lame period. There are now ou the
property 55,000 head of cattle, exclusive
of about 6,000 on a smaller ranch adjoining,
belonging toa company of which Mr. Dor
ley is also the chief owner and president.
As above slated. Mr. Dorsey and Col.
Ingersoll will now go to Europe. Their
investment provides them with the
“actual necessities” of life and something
over, and they propose to enjoy existence,
Mr. Dorsey will be gone a year or two.
while Col. Ingersoll proposes to be abroad
with his family at least five years.
Sorrow’s Stealthy Lruul.
[Chicago Times.]
He was a busy man and she was a so
ciety woman One evening he suddenly
looked up from his paper and said: “By
the way. didn’t we have a baby in this
bouse about the time Midland broad
gauge went up to 98?" “ Yes, ” she said,
“Oscar was born on the night of the
reception. ” “Boy, was it?”
he said, with a show of interest. “I had
forgotten; must lie about 7 months old by’
his time. Where is he’” Bhe touched a
ell, when a servant appeared, and she
ordered Oscar to be brought up into the
presence of his sire. The weeping nurse
appeared alone, and with many tears con
fessed that the infant Oscar had been kid
napped in the park six weeks before, and
that the most careful search, aided by ad
vertisements in the daily papers, had thus
far failed to repeal bis whereabouts.
Thus we see that wealth is no barrier to
sorrow, and into the homes of the rich
ind the great trouble creeps in with its
healthy tread, and sometimes breaks up a
whole evening of enjoy went.
Providing Against Poverty.
[Boston Gazette. 1
There fa an artist in this city who, like
most of those of his ilk, has his alternate
periods of prosperity and nnancial depres
sion, but who, unlike many others, is of
t unique philosophic disposition. When
ever he has a streak of good luck and sells
i picture he goes and gels the money’ he
receives all in $1 bills. These lie rolls up
leparately and throws about his studio in
list riminately, reserving only a few dol
ars for immediate necessities.
Then, when he gets hard up, he goes
rummaging around behind pictures anti
frames, under chairs and lounges, among
old paint tubes and other rubbish, until
he has found some of the wads of dollar
bills which he had previously sown broad
cask He says that if he kept the money
in his pocket he should be sure to spend
it, and that hunting for and finding it
when needs press is like a renewed touch
of prosperity. It is said that Daubigny,
the great French landscapist, did the same
thing, only he could sow golden louis d or

Ancient I’ipes in Ireland.
{Philadelphia Pres*.]
Small tobacco pipes of an ancient form
are frequently found in Ireland on dig
tpng or plowing up the ground, particu
arly in the vicinity of those circular in
trenebim nts called Danish forts, which
were most probably the villages or settle
ments of the native Irish. In the first
volume of “Anthologia Hibernica, ” there
is a print of one which was found at Ban
nockstowu, County Kildare, sticking be
tween the teeth of a human skull, and it
is accompanied by a paper which goes to
prove that the northern nations of Europe
were aeqitiaiiited with tobacco, or an herb
of similar properties, and that they
smoked it through small tubes—of course,
long before the existence of America was
known. The arguments in favor of the
antiquity of smoking receive additional
support from the discovery of several
small clay pipes in the bull of a ship
found some years since when excavating
at Dantzig.

Government hospitals, for the treatment
of persons suffering from consumption,
ought to tie established at military posts
at Texas, Colorado and southern Cali
fornia, where the conditions of altitude,
mild temperature, and dryness of the air
are unexcelled. Such .stations of obser
vation ought to be under the supervision
of the national board of health, in order
that the best possible usejcould be made of
the information which might be obtained.
It is probable that valuable discoveries re
garding the nature and progress of con

were constantly observing CAseS of the dis
ease uuder favorable conditions. Con
sumption is such a scourge to humanity
that any means of abatement cannot be
considered too expensive.
