Presentments of tixe Grand airy.
Geonpa. >ln.H:ocee Cnnty:
Thn Grand Jurors worn, chocm, and selected for ’he
county of Hueeogpe for thn December term 1854 of Mus-
C'rttoe Superior Court, and the tirat panel thereof, aeg .eavr i
to make the following zenerni presentments:
We rind the Court liooae in zmui order, except the Titrht
amtr rod, ami a .' brnaen panes of glass m oaverai ol
tile windows.
VV., uni the Id m mod order, as for as we coul<l as
certain, with tiie exception ofsome of the wmdow biinds,
tail a tire plane in the debtor’s mom, 3nd the fence and
sates around said-lot, which require ?ome repairs, aii ol
which we would m“neeUnily recommend to be done mme
liatei v. We recommend to the Inferior Court that a sun
-aantlai brick wml, ammt twenty ieet high.be buiit around ,
♦tie lad: the amount ao--v paid for guards to hie Jaii.would,
if aatd tor one year, more than build such a wail as is
needed, ami foorougniy protect the jail and secure the in
mates thereof.
•Cu have examined the hooka at all the officers of the
County and take great pleasure in testifying to the neat
ness and good style in wruci* they have been aept. t lur
examination was not so foil as ;t would otherwise have
been, as ’hrse offices bad so recently been examined oy our
predecessors. *
We rind in ’he hands of the county Treasurer, on the ITth
January, 1855, a balance in favor oi the county or $69 56.
We find the roads and bridges generally ,n good orrier,
with the exception of the mad leaning from Columbus to
T libmton: that from Columbus to Lindsay's Mill is in bad
order- Ramsey's Hill is too narrow for wagons to pass
each other; also the hill at Bull Greek.
We rind, by the affidartts-of the Tax collector and also
ot Mr k ”e, that Mr Kyle for himself has paid SIO 65
more than was doe, also, that as agent for Dozier Thom
t-u, tie aas overpaid 54253. We recommend that the
proper authorities refund to him these amounts. We have
examined the tax collector's book, and find on his
insolvent li?t and* rni errors n his .-aid Books that there
is lie sum ot SB6O 62 on State and county tax; we recom
mend bat this sum he allowed him .
Wa request the-clerk of the interior court to furnish the
managers of the neakpetobex election with a list of ail
who in ve efused or failed to pav their taxes, so that they
shad not be allowed u> vote until said taxes, are paid.
We iir-'-nt as an cvtl needing correction, that the Jus
tices ot die Peaee. of the eouttfjf, rail to render proper and
foil lists of tlie person- subject So taxation in their respect
ive-districts to the Tax receiver. We have been informed
by the late tax codec or, thaiuwing to tins‘act. more than
one hundred thousand dollam cf property in tins county
pavs no tax either ?o the State or county.
We present as a nuisance the practice of certain parties
n the city of Commons issuing change foils, called ‘shin
piaster*.’ We would recommend to our good cinzens that
tliev cease to receive such a circulation in payment of any
d.*bt whatever.
Wa cannot take leave of his Honor, Judge Womil,
without teal living to his court ray and urbanity as a xentle-
Tian.'ind Pis firmness and mpaitiaiitv as a .lodge.—
V ; feel, riiat under his administration, the law will become
a terror to evil doers. We congratulate the country on
his accession to the Bench,
The Solicitor General pro. tern., James X. Ramsey.
E.-q.. is entitled to our thunks for his attention to this body;
