James stobertson Arnold died in London on Locemoei Ui.i. He wus second son of Benedict Arnold, , V “*“* hjs wde, daughter of Chief Justice Shippen, of iennsylvmnn. i!e entered the corps of Royal Engineers in 17JJ, and served more than half a century. He married V !igi...n, daughter of Bartlett Goodrich, Esq., of the Isle of Wi; ;ht, and tor his military services was created a Knight of Hanover, was appointed aid-de-camp to William IV., and was presented with’a costly sword.” I he :v;ove named officer was the oldest of four children whicli Arnold’s second wife, Miss Shippen, of Philadelphia bore him, viz: James Robertson, Edward, George and So plna. Ilis first wile boro three sons, viz : Benedict, Richard and Henry. Benedict, die oldest was an officer of artillery in the British army, ant!, it ia believed, was compelled to to quit the service; he died young in the West Indies.— Heniy entered the King s service alter his father’s defection, and was a lieutenant of cavalry in the American Region, lie accompanied his father to St John, and was employed in Ins business. He slept in the warehouse near the Lower Love in tin t city, and io.dficd there the night the budding was burned. He lived afterwards at Troy, New York, wi.h his Aunt Hannah, and was engaged in mercantile pur suits. At a subsequent period, he removed to Canada, wnere he is now a man of property. He received half pay ans a grant o! lands from the British government. Rich ard in 1 7dt5 lie was also a lieutenant of cavalry in the American Legion, commanded by his father. In most every particular his history is identical with that of his brother Henry. Persons are still living at St. John who resided there when General Arnold’s store was burned IBe impression was, at the moment, and still is, that the fire was caused by -design, and for the purpose of de frauding a c npany in England, that had under-written upon the merchandise which it contained, to an amount Hr exceeding its worth. These persons differ as to the fact, whether Arnold himself was at St. Jonn, or absent in’ Eng la.id, at the tunc of the fire ; and hence the degree of blame wmen should ! jj attached to the two sons may he uncertain, i eat. both I Jenry and Richard slept in the store on the night cd the coming!ation, and that neither could give a satisfac tory account el t, cause, seems however, to be certain. It may be aimed, that the first General Arnold’s mother had six chil dfun, of.whom lie and Ids sister Hannah alone lived to the years of maturity. The sister adhered to her brother Ben eaiei throughout Ins eventful and guilty career, and was true to.aim in the da:kest periods of his history. She died at Montague, in Upper Canada, in 1803, and was uniformly siftted, a lady ol excellent qualities of character. English Compensation for Lib or a ted Slaves.
