OBITHAKY.
Died, near this city, on the 23d instant, of scarlet fever,
So;\n, second daughter of Col. Samuel Rutherford, aged
] l years, 5 months and 4 days.
Our Saviour said: “Suffer little children, and forbid them
not., to come unto me, for oi such is the kingdom of heav
en;”— and, in thus taking this child from its parents, the
writer can but feel that it is to transplant it from this worid
of wickedness, of vicissitudes and trouble, to a brighter and
happier home, and to add another to the angelic hosts
around our Saviour’s throne.
It is true this child was remarkable for its amiability and
sweetness of character, its thoughtfulness and affectionate
disposition, solacing and consoling its parents, since first it
learned to understand and love them—it is true, that young
as she was, she not only loved her Bible, but read it to oth
er children of her age, white and black, and attempted to
instruct them in teaching, thus giving much promise of use
fulness—and the hearts of all who knew her warmed to
wards her as she came about them, and it seems hard to
give her up, yet “the Lord gave and the Lord hath ta
ken away, blessed be the name of the Lord.”
Yea, “far be it from God, that he should do wickedness;
and irom tho Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.”

MOBILE AND GIRARD RAIL EOAd!
THE Passenger train will leave Silver Run at ly, A M, and .

ol March next. Stockholders aitending the Convention on thatj
day, will with tbeir families, bebrought up and returned free.

To tlie Stoelcliolrlei sos tlie Ist Division of
tile Mobile &- Girard Hail Road) from Co
lumbus to Union Springs:—
Gentlemen: —The present condition of the road demands
the earnest attention and prompt action of the Stockhold
ers. A portion ol ihe Road has been finished, equipped and
put in operation, but there exists a large amount of indebt
edness which must be provided for, or else suits will be in
stituted against the Road at the March Term of the Rus
sell Circuit Court, and judgments rendered at that Term,
under which all that portion of tne road now finished, with
its equipment will be sold, and pass into other hands and
become a total loss to the present Stockholders.
Yon are aware that the late President, Judge Iverson,
resigned on the first of January, and that Maj. John H.
Howard was elected to fill the vacancy. He has not yet
accepted the office, and will not until arrangements are
made to pay the debts and progress with the Road to Un
ion Springs. He and others are making every effort to
obtain additional subscriptions, and it is hoped and believed
that a considerable sum will be obtained, but it is well as
certained that a sufficient amount cannot be thus raisc-d to
accomplish the objects desired. Something, therefore, must
be done by the present Stockholders te prevent the loss of
what has already been invested and expended in the road.
.YVe therefore earnestly invite you to meet at the depot in
Girard, on Thursday the first day of March next, at 10 o’-
clock, A. M., at which time a full exposition will be made
ol the past transactions and present condition of the com
pany, and when, it is hoped, some plan will be adopted to
relieve the road from its present embarrassments ami pro
vide for its further progress.
