First in the Field. The Temperance Banner contains the letter of Mr. Overbey, accepting the nomination of the Atlanta Con vention. That the public may understand his position we make the following extract from it: ‘Tst* I am in favor of repealing the License laws now in force in this State. • 2d. I will advocate Legislative action to suppress the sale of bquor, in any quantity, to be drank as a beverage at the place of sale. I do not object to the sale and use of wine or spirituous liquors for medical, mechanical, or religious purposes. This is my exposition of the platform laid down by the Covention. Our Banner, with the above sentimtents plainly incrib ed upon its spotless folds, is thrown to the breeze. We invite every philanthropist, and patriot, and Christian, to rally with us under this standard, and make one deter mined, indomitable effort against grog shops and crimes, and for our wives and children.” Southern Central Agricultural Society. Atlanta, March 8. The Executive Committee of the Southern Centra A >ricnltural Society, assembled in this place to consider the various propositions for holding the next annual Fair, have decided in favor of Atlanta, the bid from that place more favorable and largely in advance of all others. The next Fair will be held on the week commencing September 12, 1855. Respectfully, J- Camak, Sec., S. C. A. S. Election of Directors of Central Bank. —The fol lowing are the Directors of the Central Rank, elected Samuel G. Cattle,, J. M. W itbers, W. W. Allen, J. 11. Murphy, Geo. Goldthwaite, Wm. M. Marks, Nat. Harris, C. T. Pollard, F. M. Gilmer, jr., Wm. Knox. The election for President and other officers it is thought, will be held to-day. The stock in this bank we learn, is now held exclusively by Montgomery and Mobile —Mobile, it is stated, by purchasing the New York stock has the majority of shares and the control of the Bank, at least, such is the statement of rumor.— Ala. Journal , 13th. __ Compliment to Mr. Dowdell. -Madison, the Wash ington correspondent of the Jacksonville Ala., Republi can, writing about motters and things, says : “There are a few members from the different States, who labor hard while hero to expedite and dispatch the business that centos up before them. Among them are the lion. James F. Dowdell, Benjamin Fitzpatrick and C. C. Ciay, jr., ot your State. Although Mr. Dowdell’s temporary absence Wm the city a short time, was much regretted, yet his speedy return was greeted by the social and political circles in which he moves. The bland man ners of this gentleman, the soundness of his head, with lucid views upon the cardinal points of democracy, emi nently qualify him to exert an influence in political cir cles, which can be attained but by few. Mr. Dowdell’s eourse is onward and upward, and Alabama can readily appreciate the abilities of this modest and meritorious statesman, and will soon, justly too, honor him with the most elevated position within her gift. In truth, he has an old head upon a young man’s shoulders ; and at this time his mind is more intellectual, with a purer heart and more upright motives than some who occupy seats in the Senate of tho U. CAUTION TO THE PUBLIC. £ BANK OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA, } Savannah, J3th March, 1855. f WITHIN the past two weeks, a number of Bilis have been presented at the Bank of the State of Georgia, purport ing to be of this Bank, of the denomination of SSO, pavable at the Branch in Augusta, to John Phinzy, dated 4th March, 183(5, and Bth Nov., 1840, signed A. Porter, Cashier, and W. B. Bul loch, President, which are spurious. The genuine plate of the sb’s is so nearly imitated that it is well calculated to deceive. The signatures are well executed, ‘apparently engraved, and traced over with pen and ink. The paper is thick, and of a dingy yellow, and the back of the counterfeit not printed in red ink. The general appearance is rather good, but the fraud may be detected by noticing the filling up of the words Branch, Augusta, the number, dale, payee, and the thickness and color of thc)paper. A.
