Wm. 11. Milburn, recently delivered a lecture be JL fore the New Yorh.fi/eicantile Library Association on “The Southern Man.” We annex someextracts which both fortheir fidelity and beauty will be read with interest. Where the summer lengthens itself into nine continuous months, where the day is deliciotn anti the night cool and spicy, the Southern man grows up a noble specimen of the physical mau, endowed with nervous vitality, for he is accustomed from hie earliest years to the most active exercises, ei gaged in all the athletic sports of youth on foot and horseback, in the iorcst and and the held ; used to the pistol ami the rifle, and the chase.— Yet in every motion there is a degree ol lassitude, surprising to those who understand not the effect ot his clime, and which yet imparts a degree of ease, of graceful elegance, rarely possessed except by an inhabitant ol a warm southern climate. In the lona, glorious noontides, swinging luxuriously in his hammock, he inhales delicious airs, but laden, alas ! with death; they have on his cheek ti * marks of his origin, and the tale is goon told that tqe liver of the southern man is altogether out of order. This is a most magniheant hint, and the fact was contem plated by the Greeks who made tire word “melancholy,” which means, by etymology, “a black or disordered liver.” We fully agree with the gifted author of the above extract, and are happy to call the attention of ihc-se having a diseased liver, or any of those diseased so c.ommom to a Southern climate, to to Hampton’s Vegetable Tincture the great invigomtor of ihe | system; by ita use all sulferingfrom lassitude and weakness be -1 comes robust and full of energy, we offer below some ol the un solicited testimony, W asiungton, JSfay 17,1853.
