Among the arrivals from Florida yesterday, we were pleased to greet this distinguished citizen, who returns from me‘-Land of Flowers” with renewed health, vigor, and spirits. It would seem that Mr. Bancroft makes as good a traveler as diplomat or historian, fcince leaving Savan nah, he nas visited the various towns upon our’ southern coast, looked upon the ancient city of hit. Augustine, and explored the St. John’s “as far up as Enterprise. He has left no place behind that could throw light upon his histo ric!; studies, and everything seems to have made a deep impression upon his mind. Especially was he interested in the striking antiquities of the oldest city in America, and the sublime waters of the distant Bt. Johns. Though so far ou; of the world, however, he does not appear to~have lost his interest in it. He enquired as eagerly after the death of tlie Czar and the news from aebastopol, as the supposed Russian that spoke an American brig a few days since, and learning the much disputed fortress was not yet taken, sud denly disappeared.— Sav. Georgian, 24 th. Tiie Present State of the Usury Laws ijt England. —The Much number of Hunt’s Merchant’s Magazine is on our table, containing its usual variety of interesting mercantile reading. We extract from its pages the following propositions de duced from the report or’ a recent action on a Bill of Ex ahange.in the Court of Common Pleas, in London, and the decision of the Judge. It furnishes a brief summary of the existing law of Usury. 1. No person can legally take more than £5 per cent, per annum interest on loans under j£lo,except pawnbrokers and except on bills of exchange and promissory notes at [ess than, three monthes date, or having less than 3 months to run. 2. Any rate of interest may betaken on bills of exchange and promiaory notes, under £lO, at three months date, or not having more than three months to run; and there may also be collateral security on land for the pay ment of such bills or notes. 3. Any rate of interest may be taken for sums above -CIO on bills of exchange and promissory notes of more than 3 and less than 12 months date or time to run, and also on ail other contracts of similar date, provided there be no landedfKesrity. 4. In ail other instances the old usury laws are all in jorce. New Hampshire Election. We take the following summary of the result of the late election in New Hampshire from the Concord Patriot, the : administration organ. The vote for Governor stands thus: Baker. Metcalf. Bell. Fowler. dem. K. N. whig. £ soil. ‘219 towns.. .26,361 32,650 3,510 1,265 Metcalfs majority 1,014. Nine small towns remain to be heard from. Below is the Patnofs summary of the grand defeat in its own words. Governor.— Ralph Metcalf, the American candidate, is chosen Governor, by about 300 majority over ail others. Members or Congress.— The ‘American candidates are elected in ad their congressional districts. They are as fallows. District No. 1 James Pike is elected by about 5,000. District N 0.22 .Mason W. Tappan has over 3,500 majority. District No. 3: A. H. Cragin has ’about 3,500 ! majority. Limit, id Commissioner.—Francis H.
