J,aw Versus Saw. Sitting in his office was a lawyer— Standing in the street, a sawyer; On the lawyer’s anxious lace, Vou could read a knotty case Needing law ; f While the sawyer gaunt and grim, On a rough and knotty limb, Kan a saw. Now the saw-horse seemed to me Line a double Xin lee ; v ‘ ’ 1 And the saw, Which ever way ’twas thrust, Musi be lot lowed by the dust, Like the law. And the log upon the track, Like a client on the rack, Played it 9 part— As the tempered teeth of steel Made a wound that would not heal, Through the heart. And each severed stick that fell, In its lulling seemed to tell, All too plain, Os the many severed l ies That in lawsuits will arise, Bringing pain. Then methonght the sturdy paw That was using axe and saw On the wood, Held a yielding mine of wealth, With its honest toil and health, Doing good. li the chips that strewed the ground, By some stricken widow found, In her need, Should by light and warmth impart, Blessings to her aged heart, Happy deed. This conclusion, then, I draw-: That no exercise of jaw— Twisting India-rubber law, Is as good A- the exercise of paw On the handle of a saw, Sawing wood. Important to the Ladies—The spring Sonnet. The bonnets this season are not so much flared as last > the crowns drop more, and the front is slightly projecting, and very many recovered with dotted lace, either black or white. They are trimmed with a profusion of flowers, intermingled with while and black blonde. Flowers are muc h used in trimming, both inside and out, and quite a no vel client is produced by the combination of wnite and black blonde. Straw enters largely into the composition „f bonnets this season, the fronts of many being formed of ii and the trimmings of others receiving additional beauty from the intermixture of flowers of the same glancing ma terial. - v Mrs. Partington expresses great apprehension that the people in California will bleed to death, as every paper she picks up announces “another vein opened!” A sentimental chap in Rhode island intends to petition Congress for an appropriation to improve the channels of affection, so that henceforth the “course of true love may run smooth.” Disastrous Fire. On Thursday morning last, about 3 o’clock, a fire broke out in a stable on the premises of Mr. J. S. Ilution, Cher ry Street, below 3d, and very rapidly spread to the small adjacent outbuildings and thence to the residences and shops on 4th and Mulberry Streets, making a clean sweep of the block below the Floyd House, and two dwellings, on 4th St, across the alley and South of it. At one lime, the Market House and residence of Mr. James Knight were in imminent danger, but fortunately escaped with a j good sc re hi ng. There was a stiff’breeze at the time from the North West which prevented the conflagration taking a direction which would have resulted in a much more serious calamity. The buildings destroyed were not of great value, but the loss is nevertheless considerable to owners and occupants, only part of which is covered by insurance. The principal sufferers areE. F. Brown,Esq., D. Mcatli, John Daev, Alex. Richards, Isaiah Chain, Mr. Moulton and Mrs. Tobin. Messrs. Carhart & Roft’lost a valuable mule and a dray and harness. Mr. Hutton suf* Fire in Mobile. On Sunday morning, between five and six o’clock, a fire ■broke out in the carpenter shop of Mr Swasey, on Frank lin I clow Church street. Before the alarm was sounded it had got considerable headway, and the wind sweeping from the northeast, the flames soon communicated with the con tiguous buildings, until every house within the square boun ded on the north by Church street and on the South by Monroe, on the e-t by Hamilton and on the east by I ranklin streets, was entirely consumed. Tno New Orleans Election. i be contest yesterday, as was anticipated, resulted in the election of the Reform (Know Nothing’) Candidates, with a single exception, by a large majority. Recoider Bright is re-elected by a majority of 1370 votes, and the Alder men and assistant Aldermen ran about even with the Re < order. Ihe only returns we could not get were those front the Eleventh Precinct, which do not change the re sult. *1 he election passed off very quietly indeed.no rows and scarcely even a knock down at the polls. Alter night fall the rowdy spirit showed J itself a little, but not to a greater extent than is usual on such occasions. Mr. Logan McKnight, of the fourth District, is the only Democrat elected.— JS.
