Classical Criticism. The following bit of high art criticirm in from a De troit paper: A crowd was poring into Fireman’s Ilall And 1 101 l owed. An emense crowd was there, A li-teniu to a Idler as was playin on a mnsicle Clipboard, which gave forth, duhott sounds. 1 Ih.gered. it was tjtrakorse. lie went in on Tropicle fruits generally, not to mention lemons. Then come Assoluta and her sister, and sung 4 ‘Vediai CarimV’ or the Canine ‘tidder—a lemale Dog as had lost her husband, and then a in* Te.mission, which was the best perlormance to Look at the wjtnrnin in. Groat Blow—Several Vessels ashore jatTyboe. The wind horn th; N. E, rose to a great height last night, and we legretlo state proved disastrous to the ship ping m the vicinity of Tyt.ee. The following vcs-els tvwe driven ashore: Bark Clrr mont, consigned to E. A. SoularJ, went ashore on the beach, a little übeve the light hom-e, it is leared she will b.l_:e as the sea i- bieakmg over her. ’lire Ellen Austin, a now ship, dragged her anchors near the beach, but as yet inis received no injury. Ship Southport went ashore on the dry part of the nole, and is leaking badly. Bark Glasgow dragged her anchors, and went ashore in Cockspur Channel; it is hoped the vessel will be gotten off as soon as the weather moderates. A steamer has been sent to the relief of the vessels.— Journal 1$ Courier,‘•list rust. Arrest <f Hines. —The notorious Dr. Ilines, a convict in the Kentucky Penitentiary who escaped, was arrested in Louisville Wednesday, lie was living there under the assumed name of Col. Hamilton. Sweet. —This is the height of the “sugar season” in Ver mont —a Slate which makes about six millions of pounds ot thesachaiiue article, annually—worth, it is estimated, $650,000. Avery pretty item, certainly. The subject is decidedly a sweet one, and reminds us of a toast which some Green Mountain boy sent in to a Vermont festival iiolden in Lowell, Mass.,sometime last year. It ran thus: “Vermont —Famous for the great production of your great staples—men, women, maple sugar and horses. The first ate strong, the last ate fleet, ‘f he second and third are exceedingly sweet, And all are uncommonly hard to beat!” Someone has defined love : A little sighing, a little crying, a little dying and a deal of lying. COTTON —There has been so very lew and limited transactions since the arrival of the steamer Nashville, it is d.ftivult to know the effect of the news upon our market. So far as the few operations indicated anything, prices are about as they were at our hist notice of the market. Wo therefore continue to quote principal sales 8 to 9 cents. Charleston, April 20. The sales of Cotton to-day amounted to 3,270 bales, at extremes ranging from to 10 cents. The market closed firm, and Middling Fair commands 9-L and Good Middling- 9§ cents. The attention of our readers is called to Professor Hol loway’s Advertisement in another part of our columns.— The world wide renown of his Pills and Ointment are two well known to require much comment from us ; but they are without doubt, the most efficacious remedies for all the ills which flesh is heir to. Many of our readers have de rived immense benefit from us ng the Pills in cases ot bile, and gene al derangements of the stomach and bowels, and no cutaneous di-ease can resi-t the curative powers of the Ointment, the effect it has on the rame is certainly aston ishing Pathlation o p the Heart, Nervous Diseases, Liver Complaint, Neuralgia, Dyspepsia, Costiveness and Piles, are ail re'ieved and cured in an incredible short time, by Carter’s Spanish Mixture, the great tonic and purifier ot the blood It contains not a particle ot Mercury, Opium, or any noxious drug, is perfectly harmless, and has cured more than five hundred cases of di-ease. We can only refer the reader to the certificates, a few ot which may be found in another column, and all of which a<e detailed in lull around the bottle. It is tlie greatest cl all Spang and ball Medici- es, and possesses an influence over the blood truly remarkable. ■•See advertisement. an7lm. ——— *~ fti#’*’ The relaxing heats of summer leave behind them a long train of evi s. The most universal ot these are general denility and its sure attendant, lowness of spirits. For these we can recommend a speedy and unlailing cure, in the shape of lloodat d’s German Bitters, prepared by Dr C. M Jack-on, Philadelphia, it is, in our opinion, a medicine sui generis —alone—unapproachable. It s. eras to r.ach the fountain head of ‘he rtitliculty in the digestive organization, and thus to relieve the secretions and the blood ofthe inaceries tnorbi, or the cause of disease. Its tonic properties give vigor to the membranes ot the stom ach, and promote the secretion ot the gastric juice, which dissolves the food, while its cordial, soothing, and alteta tive influence imparts general regularity and strength to the action of the secretive organs, and seems to fortify the con stitution. Such is our own experience ot its effects, and we believe it is confirmed by the evidence ot all who have tried it, or had an opportunity ot witnessing its operation. For sale by Dr. C. M. Thousands had perisned without even a iiope of relief, and although thousands may yet be destined to led the direful effects of this most complicated disease, it is now, thanks to the research ot Dr. M’Lane, complete ly brought within the scope of medical control. The pro prietors of the Liver Pills feel confident that they offer a remedy which has been fully tested by time, and which has never tailed of success when faiily tried.
