On Thursday j ai/nt, the Commencement Sermon was preached by the j R “ v W. H. Potter. His text, it I forget not, was: “Fear | Gji ” Mr. Potter, i? apparently, a young man, but his ser- i mon was of full maturity ; it was appropriate, pertinent and impressive. It was indeed a feast. On Thursday ev- ; ening the Commencement Address was delivered by Judge ; GL Barry. The College hall, though large and spacious, 1 was crowded to overflowing. Barf >’ disappointed i them not. In floe, Judge | Barry’s effort was able, eloquent and powerfully impressive, j aod entirely congenial to the feelings ot the audience, as was often indicated by their frequent and loud applause.— Dating the exercise?, at intervals, we had music, and this deserves our special attention; for it was of no ordinary kind. There was a band, composed of twelve or more, j whose appearance iu uniform on the stage was impressive and dignified. It was lead by Professor Lignoski. It is ot late origin, and is called “Randolph College Harmonica.” It deserves much credit and applause to: the ability and skill it displayed. There was also occasional music from j Professor Lignoski and his pupils of Andrew Female Col- j lege. One piece,called “Randolph College March,” com- j posed by Prof. Lignoski, and pertormed by Miss Rebecca ; Taylor, was conspicuous among the rest, for elegance in j composition and ability in performance. On the whole, the Commencement exercises of this j youngCollge, from first to last, were highly creditable to ; Faculty and Students. There was no show of gaudy pomp j or modern display. All indicated that here was the foun- j tain, and that the young men in attendance dranx not of its shallows but from its depth?. It is to be earnestlyTboped that this Institution will be cherished and supported by the iriends ot Education in South-western Georgia,and that the individuals who have Tisked their time, means ar.d talents in the erection thereof, may not be disappointed in their endeavors and hopes of usefulness. C. (For the Times <3c Sentinel.) Pleasure Jaunt. On the morning of the Oth inst., vve found ourselves comfortably seated in an omnibus for the Girard and Opelika Depot. The startling scream and sweeping stroke of the engine soon announced our departure on a oar equipped in superior style, and a train managed bv a polite conductor, and efficient officers. Fields and forests, farm houses and orchards, and valleys smiling in the morning sun, passed by in quick succession. Cottou and corn seemed to clap hands for joy by reason of recent showers, inducing bright pros- pects of an abundant harvest, iSoon the screeching whistle, and clanking chains of the breakman brought us to a halt at Opelika. Baggage in hand, we jump ed aboard a carriage, in readiness, to convey us to our ‘ destination, and whirled on arnid the eouud of crashing • wheels over rocks and hills to Oak Bowery. This is indeed a quiet and pleasant village. It is j darkened b} thick shades of wide spreading forest oak3, fanned by sweeping breezes, supplied with water bold aad free, sweet and cold, trom crystal forests, and in habited by a people whose bodies are only to grow as large as their 4ouls to make them giants. On Sabbath morning th* Commencement sermon of the Female College was. preached, by Rev. Mr. Martin, to a crowded house. In many parts of his discourse, be was practical, sound, pertinent, elegant, and, in the whole, did ample justice to tne occasion. In the evening, a large number of persons were en tertained by Rev. Mr. Ferguson, now of newspaper notoriety. The mutual rasping and sharp shooting, be tween himself and Elder Henderson, we think, can re* suit in no good to thetuselves, as men, or, to their re spective Churches. Religious contentions, like s r reet , wrangling in politics, uever convinces, but strengthens and confirms prejudices. lie represented the claim* of the Methodist Tract Society, at Nashville well.bat preached too long. A number of his audience were snoozing when he concluded, and, despite his appeuis to their liberality, retreated from the house, before he could send round the sack for the pieces of silver. Oa the second day, the first clast was examined. — They recited with a readiness and precision unusual to female schools, showing that their instructors had fol- j lowed the golden rule in their tuition, “Aon quam mut- 1 turn, sed quant bene.'’ A motto, worthy to be engrs- \ ved oa the palms of the hands of the student, and i written on every page h e goes over. The juvenile exhibition in the evening was ereaita- j ble, and the music of the accomplished Miaa J— , ‘ nob, par excellence. The examination of the more advanced e’asses | eame otT on the third day, followed in the evening by a novel arrangement to os. denominated, a “Sur prise Tarty.” Imagine yourself, reader, quietly seated around the family i ircle, alter sipping a hasty cap of | te. The shades of night are falling thick and fast around | you, when your attention is suddenly arrested by sounds ! of merry voices without. These grow more and more d.siinct, as they approach your threshold. You look, I and behold troops and squad rone of young gentlemen and Isdies knocking for admittance. They have come uninvited and unexpected, to spend the evening in a so oin! party, to the great discomfiture of an unprepared family, end visiting gncs.s, who have retired. When the night was well nigh worn, the company returned, with light hearts and heavy heads, showering a profusion of praises up on their worthy hostess. On the fourth day, we were summoned to the Chap* el at an early hour, to witness the closing exercises.— The class presented were fair as angels, and altogether lowly. May they always be as happy as their faces were then lovely and bright ! We would notice each and all the compositions and give a critical analysis, but space ana timo will not per mit. The diction was chaste and elegant, but they would have had some better effect, had they been read more distinctly. The first subject was “Novel Reading.” We do not mention this because it, though excellent, was better than the rest, but because we think the ideas inculcated therein, more eminently suggestive of the plan of instruction adopted by the President, in every department of this College. He seems to ignore the idea of making Bickly sentimental women—stuffing their minds with romance, music and novels. lie would rather cultivate all the organs of the mind in eymme terical proportion, avoiding the expansion of one or gans, to the neglect or impoverishment of another. We subscribe to his views on this point. Too many sickly imaginations are manufactured now a days in schools. Imaginations that could muse over a putrid mud puddle, until’ its waters expand into a broad and trans parent lake, until the waters upon its surface are trails* formed into navies, and its native ammaleulai metamor phosed into iiviathans. Os late we leave a female College at every cross road, they are getting so thick that they could bestirred up with a stick. Giaduatts turned out yearly are bred and completed to the taste of lustful appetence, whose highest ambition is, to sing, to dance, to dress, to troii the tongue and roll the eye. L : ght literature is recom mended first and last, w ith the assurance that it primes the imagination, and gives scope to thoughts, not con sidering, that it is only a dres3 to the mind—an orna ment rather than a necessary of life—the auroral light, that beautifies the landscape with tints of crimson and gold, without possessing the life giving principle ot the sun-beam, to germinate a single plant, or unfold a single flower. The excises were concluded by addresses from Rev. Mr. Ferguson, and II >n. Janies Dowdell, urging subscriptions for the Auburn Male College. The latter gentleman throws a flood of light and learning upon everything he touches. e understand he has consented to head the Democracy for Congress in his'District. Though he has a majority of fi leec hundred against him, we believe that his prominence as a man, and reputation as a statesman will secure his election. Let the Democracy rally around him, and their colors will never trail in the dust. On the evening of the fourth day, the show wound ;upby a grand party, giveu by Mrs. J. D —• Ice ! creams, fiuits, and the rarest delicacies of the eeason, ; were poured out bountifully. A gal&x y and glow of associated beauty were present—some ot the young | gentlemen in our oompany, have assured us, that poetry, | blushing skies, moonlit roses iMc., have fluted across i the eanvas of their fancy, ever since. Certain it is, many left Oak Bowery with wounded bear’s. Nothing so serious though, as to require the aid ot a physician, ! or, in the words of Miss L. The annual Examination of this Institution was held on ’ the 6th, 7th & Bth June. The performances of the differ | ent Classes were creditable, fully sustaining the well earned and extended reputation of the gentlemen composing the i Faculty of instruction. The spectators from day to day seemed to be both interested and satUfied. The Commencement Sermon was preached on Thurs- I day evening, by the Rev. W. li. Potter. Commencement Address on Friday evening, by G. L. Barry, Esq , was an i able and elaborate effort, powerfully portraying the evils 1 of absenteeism in the education ol our youth, ana demon* | stratiug the necessity of home institutions, with satire and wit, which called forth the hearty applause ! of the immense audience in attendance. On the whole, we’regard the Exercises ol this fust annu- al Examination, as presaging, for this yo-Jthtui College, a prosperous future and a successful maturity.
