The steamship Canada has arrived at Halifax, with dates from Liverpool to the 29th ult. Cotton had declined an eighth of a penny. Sales ol the week 36,000 bales. Rreadstufl's unchanged. Money market stringent; rate of interest raised to live per cent. Consols 88 1-4 aSS 1-2. The Allies had landed 30,000 men at Eupatoria, to act against the Russian flank. The Russians were strongly fortifying the Jsorth s de of Sevastopol. There had been heavy storms in the Crimea. The Allies are repairing and strengthening the defences of the South side of Sevastopol. The Me3illa Valley. The San Antonio (Texas) Sentinel,in noticing the ar rival at that place of a portion of the American party re cently engaged in Use survey ot the new boundary Detween the United States and Mexico, of the far tamed Mesilla Valley, says: “The country all the way, with a lew exceptions, is eniirely destitute of timber. Along the stiearns, which are small, there is more or lest timber, which, along the bot toms, is generally cotton wood and ash. “The soil is described as being generally iertile, and in the valleys very rich, ‘t he places where water is conven ient are well adapted to stock raising. The Grama grape grows almost universally on the high lands. It may be called a winter giape,and from the month of October till jvi u y it is equally as good tor horses as corn or oats. Du ring the summer months it is not very good. Different kinds of grass grow in the valley. The country along the line for about one hundred miles west ol El Paso is desti tute of water, and is generally a sandy plain. From thence on to lire San Luis Springs, a distance ot about torty miles, water is abundant. About ten miles west ol the last nam ed place is the Canon de Guadalupe, which is the dividing ridge between the waters ot the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Along the line from Guadalupe Canon to Santa Cruz water is abundant, and the country finely adapted to raising stock. ~ “It was reported that gold has been found by the Mexi cans near Santa Cruz, but none was seen by the party; but silver ore was found in abundance near Las Nogales, at the termination of the last western parallel. The speci mens arc generally very rich. It is said that there is scarcely a hill or mountain in that vicinity but what is cov ered with rock containing licit silver 01e.7 Served Him Eight. A young gentleman, yclept Alonzo Griflin, having ex pressed sentiments hostile to “the peculiar institution,” and given various indications more congenial to the atmos phere of Massachusetts than Geofgia, was ordered out of this city on Friday Jast, and was escorted to the cars on Saturday by a large company of ourjcitizens.ln consequence of his youth and weak head, no violent measures were resorted to.the people only demanding that De should make tracks northward. .We are informed, that he stated that there were twenty others of the same sort in M acon, and if the statement lie true, we hope it will not be long before they are, all drummed out of town to the tune of the Rogue’s March. OBITUARY. gfcDied, in this city, on the 7th jinstant, of typhoid lever, Mrs. Mary VV. Browne, wife of J. Rhodes Browne, in the 30th year of her age,* a native of Fishkill, New York, but for the last four years a resident of Columbus. In recording the death of this estimable lady we are for cibly reminded of the prophetic words: “In the micht ol life we are in death.” A lew days ago she was the com fort and hope of a devoted husband and child, with the promise of a life of usefulness and pious teachings; tut a premature grave has closed over her, and now she re putes in the city ol the dead. Her Fiends at a distance will be comforted to know that in her last moments every tiling which medical skill or’kind friends could suggest,was done to arrest the “fell destroyer” and soothe the dying pillow At the hour of dissolution, when spoken to upon the subject, the evidences which she gave of Christian faith and hope beyond the grave, were cleair, convincing and touchingly beautiful.
