The disease, which terminated his life, was cancer; and for months he bore this sore affliction without a murmur or com plaint, triumphant in the consolation and assurance of the premise, until it pleased his Heavenly Father to take his spirit home. In contemplating the life and death of so good a man and pious Christian, we become impressed with mixed emotions of pain, sorrow and consolation; painful, for “the house which knew him shall know him no more forever,’’ with all the clustering and consecrated affections of family, relatives and friends blighted in time; and yet, consoling, for we can not doubt his ‘-title clear” to a blessed immortality. The subject of this brief notice moved from Virginia and settled in Baldwin county, Ga., in the year 1806 became con verted, embraced religion, and attached himself to the Meth odist E. ( hurch in 1818, and for a long number of 3-ears, was a zealous Class-leader in the Ebenezer Church in Hancock co. In 1834 he removed with his family into Russell co., Ala., where he resided until the day of his death. It is foreign to our feelings to indulge in panegyric, ou so solemn an occa sion—for his work is done and he has gone to his reward. But Truth whispers, withhold not my tribute, for in all rela tions of life, he was peerless in excellence, a fond and devo ted husband, an affectionate and indulgent parent, a kind master, a good citizen, an upright man, and a God-fearing, pious Christian all the days of his connexion with the Church. In his long life, his acquaintances in Georgia and Alabama, were many, in the church and out of it; and lives there a man who has ever heard him utter au illiberal sentiment, or who has ever known bm to do an act, not strictly in accord ance with truth, justice and benevolence? Never, no never, lie was eminently an upright man and seemed enthusiastic in the discharge of all his duties. Jll his interercourse with men he neither obscured veracity by the refinements of a false politeness nor glossed over delinquency with the ambig uous phraseology of a doubtful casuistry ; but was ever plain spoken, candid, and direct, speaking to be understood, and proclaiming the truth, without fear, favor, or affection. His house was ever open to the Ministers of the Go-pel; it was the preacher’s home. Their company and conversation were his delight. How many, in the ministry, will recall the hos pitality and kindness of their brother, and the fervent piety w hich illustrated his life, and attest the truth of these re marks ? To them he was a brother, friend, co-laborer, cheer ing them on, and invigorating their zeal. And the home of t his good man was a circle of happiness, and he was rightly constituted its idol. His charity was an active, social and Christian virtue. The poor, the afflicted, and the necessitous ever found in him a comforter with an open hand and a humane heart. He left speculative ideas'of benevolence to be discussed by others; his heart was the fountain from which liberality, compassion, forbearance, good will, and good services went forth com mingling in all his actions, operating unobstrusively, and extending to his family, friends and fellow men. As he de lighted in the well being and happiness of all. so he sought at all times and on all occasions, to advance the same by the exercise of this virtue. Such has been the life of one of the best of men, universally respected and beloved by- all honor able men ; and his death is the crowning glory of a well spent life. The dread King of Terrors disturbed not his tranquil oul ; A minister and friend, as well as several members of his family who felt an interest in his soul’s salvation, inter rogated him on his bed of sickness as to his assurance of Hope, and he invariably replied that he feared not death; he was ready to die; he had not put off his preparation: he had suffi cient, evidence of his acceptance. lie lias left an aged, devo ted and pious wife, fond childreu, and a large circle of friends to mourn their loss, hut with the consolation that he is pos sessed of the inheritance—“a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” T. THE subscribers offer for sale the Plantation and de tached pieces of land of the late Major John Cantey, deceased, lying in Russell county, Ala., immediately upon the Chattahoochee river, twenty miles below Columbus Ga. The main plantation contains about three thousand acres of land, perfectly level and free from freshets; about 1800 acres of rich river bottoms, balance first quality pine lands, 1400 of which is cleared and in cultivation. This plantation is unusually well settled, having all the necessary buildings (framed) to accommodate two hund red negroes. It is well watered and healthy, and in point of fertility and location, these lands are not surpassed by any in the State. The plantation is very susceptible of di vision, and will be sold in a body or divided to suit two purchasers. Terms will be made liberal, as the lands are sold for a division.
