Murder and Suicide at Richmond. —We copy the following from the Richmond .Enquirer : AbouUthree weeks since, a young man, a stranger, \vho suited that his name was Auburn, and that he was fn>m Boston, Massachusetts, came to this city and sought and obtained work at the cabinet establishment of Messrs. Linford & Porter, as a designer and eatver. After working a few days, and proving himself a first rate car ver, and earning S3B, which were paid him, he # rented a house on Main street, near 22d street, and employed a carpenter to fit the same up for a grocery, oyster and dunking house, lie also tin ployed a young man to as sist him in the grocery, which was to be opened on Mon* day, (to day.) Ou briday night Auburn was arrested on charge of enticing away and harboring two negro men belong ing io Messrs .Jesse Williams, and James 11. Grant, and j who had disappeared a tew days previous. The time o! arrest was about 12 o’clock Friday night, and was effect- * ed by the police, who stationed themselves around Au burn’s bouse, and awaited his return which was at the late hour named. He resisted the officers with pistol and bowie knife in hand, but was overpowered and taken to tile cage. On his way to prison he drew from his pock et a phial of strychnine, and drank a portion of it, and j spit out a mouthful of the poison in the face of the offi cers who had him in charge. Two physicians were im mediately called to his relief, but ha died'from the effects of the strychnine about two hours after swallowing it ; and Uie coroner held an inquest over his body Saturday j morning. ■‘l lie charge ou which he was arrested was satisfac torily established as follows : He had received about SIOO from the two negro men under a promise to con vey them to the North, and had concealed them in the third story of his house preparatory to sending them away. One of the negroes having, complained of being unwell, iio gave him what he said was a dose of medicine, but which was no doubt strychnine, as the negro died soon after taking the dose. Auburn then dug a grave in his cellar, and with the assistance of the other negro, buried his murdered subject, first cutting his throat, rip ping open his abdomen, and horribly mutilating the body in other places. This was done, it is supposed, to pre vent the negro from recovering from the effects of the strychnine. # “These bloody scenes, occurring before the eyes of the other negro, naturally produced much alarm and un easiness in his mind ; consequently, ho embraced the first opportunity to escape from confinement, which he did by leaping from a window in the third story of the house. Jlo then returned to his master, and revealed all he knew about this singular and horrible transaction. It is believ ed that Auburn was in league with others'engaged in the business of running off slaves, but no accomplices have yet been detected. “Auburn was a young man of genteel appearance and manners, and had capacities, as a carver and designer, to earn from $5 to $8 a day. He gave, as a reason lor rent ing a house, and opening a grocery, the expected visit of his mother, and some of her family from the North to re side with him in this city.” A law has passed the Kansas Legislature exempting all slaves in the territory front levy and sale. Indiana Election. —The democratic majority in 40 counties is 8,839, which is a gain of 16,919 since the election list year. Lieutenant John N. Maffit, one of the officers fur loughed by the retiring board, has been ordered on duly again on the Coast Survey. The Fillibuster Flight. —The New York Tribune says there are letters in New York from San Juan, stat ing that Col. Kinney has abandoned his grand expedition, there being only two men of all his company who stand by him. He is expected home in the next steamer. Gas in Atlanta. —We learn from our Atlanta eotem poraries that the workmen are engaged in laying down the pipes, preparatory to lighting the new’ city with Gas. Tiie St. Louis Republican recommends the Hon. Ed ward Bates as a candidate for the Presidency. Judge Platt, U. S. Secreeary of Legation at Paris, has, it is reported, resigned. COMMERCIAL. A Secret for the Ladles. How to Preserve Health.— Don’t use Chalk, Lily White, or any of the so-caJled cosmetics, to conceal a fa ded of sallow complexion. If you would have Lie roses brought back to your cheek, a clear, healthy and transparent skin, and life and vigor infused through the system, get a bottle of Carttr’s Spanish Mixture, and take it according to directions. It does not taste quite as well as your sweet meats; but, if after a few doses you do not find your health and beauty reviving, your step elastic and vigorous, and the whole system refreshed and invigorated like a Spring morning, then you case is homeless, and all the valuable certificates we possess, go for naught.
