REED’S PATENT
CHRONOMETER ENGINE.
THIS is an improved Steam Engjne, for which Letters Pa
tent were granted to John A. Reed,of New York, Jan. 9,
1855. The nature of this improvement consists of the increase
of I‘ov. er about twenty per cent., and reducing the weight ot
the engine one half. The saving of fuel is eflected by letting
the steam in on both sides of the cylinder: doubling the sizeoi
the port, and balancing the pressure, removing the friction
and the weight of the sifle valves, eccentrics, cross heads, con
uecting rods, &c. The exceeding simplicity of this Engine,
renders it much more durable and easily managed than am
other, and when placed upon the boiler with wheels it is port
able though effective.
These engines received the First Prize Mkdal at the great
i Exhibition in Paris. There are about seventy live ot them
j now in operation, all giving great satisfaction.
