LATEIi FROM EUROPE.
ARRIVAL OF TfIB
STEAMSHIP CANADA.
PROSPECTS OF PEACE.
New York, Jan. 9.
The steamship Canada has armed at Boston with Liv
erpool date* to the 22d ult.
The news by tliis arrival is confirmatory ol previous ru
mors touching peace, and as to the mission ol Prince Es
terhazy.
The treaty. between Sweden and the Allies has been
confirmed. Matters in the Crimea and in Asia are quiet.
The Austrian ultimatum, alter some modification, has
received the approval of England, France and Austria, be
fore being sent to St. Petersburg. The terms are still a
profound secret.
The liondon Times says the terms made with Sweden
are very stringent.
Liverpool Markets.
Cotton —Fair Orleans is quoted at 6id.; Fair Mobile 6d.;
Red Wheat 10s. 9d. to 11s. 2d.
New York, Jan. 8.
Cotton is unchanged and steady. The sales amount to
1500 bales.
Flour is drooping. Ohio is quoted at $8 56. Southern
$8 87. Nothing doing in Wheat. Corn is quoted at 92
cents.
Arrival of the Arago.
JjA telegraphic dispatch was received jin Petersbug, Va.,
on Monday, announoing the arrival of this steamer at New
York Sunday night. She w.* eighteen days out, having
left Havre on the 19th, three days previous to the sailing
of the Canada from Liverpool.
The Arago’s news is unimportant. Rumors ol peace
were still numerous, but there was nothing definite. Cot
ton remained unchanged, and breadstuff;* had slightly de
clined. Accounts from the Crimea, say that the British
Army will be divided next spring, into two corps, and
placed under the command of Generals Campbell and
Eyre.
Spiritualists Taken In - The ‘‘Davenport Circle,” a
society of spiritualists —the most prominent in New York
city— W ere arrested a few days since for deceiving the
public. It appears that after their audience is assembled,
the room is made dark, and the persons present hear all
sorts of beautiful music. On the oceassion mentioned,
one of the audience uncovered a dark lantern very sud
denly, and discovered all the spiritualists with instruments
in their hands. They were arrested and made to give
up the admission mouey.
From the Albany Atlas.
Let us help one another.
[The following quaint lines convey a beautiful moral,
teaching us that there is no sphere or circumstances in life
in which we cannot render each other mutal assistance.]
A man very lame, was a little to blame,
To stray far away from his humble abode ;
Hot, thirsty, bemired, and heartily tired,
He laid himself down in the road.
While thus he reclined, a man that was blind,
Came by, and entreated his aid :
Deprived of my sight, unassisted to night,
I shall not reach my home I’m afraid.
Intelligence give, of the place where you live —
Said the cripple—perhaps I may know it;
In my road it may be, and if you’ll/carry me,
V It will give me much pleasure to show it.
Great strength you have got, which, alas ! I have not
In my legs, so fatigued every nerve is,
For the use ol your back, for the eyes which you lack,
My pair shall be much at your service.
Said the poor blind man, what a wonderful plan,
Pray get on my shoulder, good brother;
1 see all mankind, rs they are hut inclined,
May constantly help one another.

The Liver Pills —The Liver Pills of Dr. MeLane
were first used by him exclusively in his own practice. So
efficacious were they in all cases ot Liver Complaint, that
they became famous, and attracting the attention of the
medical faculty, passed into general use. I hey act with
great certainty and regularity ; the patient almost imme
diately teels the dispersion ot his disease, and is gradually
restored to health. With some the effect is almost mirac
ulous, frequently experiencing immediate relief, after hav
ing for months resorted to drugs and medicines of another
description, in vain. Diseases of the Liver are very com
mon in this country, and are often frightful in character.
Those who experience any of the premonitory symptoms
of this dangerous and complicated disease, should at once
procure a box of Dr. M’Lane’s Pills, aod perhaps, thereby,
be saved a world of misery.
Purchasers will be careful to ask for Dr. M Lane s Cel
ebrated Liver Pills, and take none else. There are oth
er Pills, purporting to be Liver Pills, now before tho public.
Dr. M’Lane’s Liver Pills, also his Celebrated Vermifuge,
can now be had at all respectable Drug Stores in the Uni
ted States and Canada. . .

VW'Ague and Feverof three years'standing cured.—
Mr John Longden, now living at Beaver Dam, Hanover
county, near Richmond, had ague and fever lor 3 years ;
most of the time he had chills twice a day,and rarely less
than once; he was parched with fever as soon as the chill
left him; and after trying physicians, quinine, most of the
‘Ponies advertised, and everything recommended to him,
was about to give up in despair, when Carter s Spanish
Mixture was spoken of. He got two bottles; but helore lie
had used more than a single one, he was perfectly cured,
and has not had a chill or fever since.
Mr. Longden is only one out ot thousands who have

[Extract of a letter received from Rev. B. C. Thomas.]
Tavoy, November 18, 1353.
Messrs. P. Davis b; Son —Dear Sirs: ****The Karens
have no more confidence in the charms of their ancestors.
They desire rational remedies for the sick. By various
means, principally through the agency of the Rev. D. L.
Bray ton, these Karen people have become acquainted with
your medicine, and their demand for it is to me very sur
prising.
I now have by me orders for more than fifty bottles, but
I have not got one bottle; I therefore wish you to send me
a quantity, and I will pay you through the tteasurer of the
Missionary Union. I hope we shall be favored with some
of it as soon ?as possible. There is no medicine which
stands so high in the estimation of the Karens of these pro
vinces as the Pain Killer, and I feel willing to gratify them,
as I entertain a very high opinion of its worth.
B. C. THOMAS.
Providence, R. 1., July 7,1551.
Messrs. Perry Davis & Son: Gents—Before 1 left Mer
oui, both Karens and Burmans had found out the value ol
your Pain Killer, and I could readily have disposed of a
large quantity of it among them, it seems particularly
efficacious in cholera morbus, bowel complaints, and oth
er diseases, to which the natives of Rurmah, from their
unwholesome style of living, are particularly exposed. It
is a valuble antidote to the poison of centipedes, scorpions,
hornets and the like. I have been twice stung by scorpions
and in both cases eased the most excruciating pain, and en
tirely prevented the swelling by applying the lain Killer.
Qn our voyage homeward from India, the Captain of the
ship was taken with vomiting and purging and other
symptoms ot cholera, I gave him a good dose Pain
Killer with the most immediate and happy results, bo en
tire and speedy was the relief, that he assured me he
would never again go a voyage without your excellent
medicine, if he possibly could procure it.
Respectfully yours,
Rev. J. BENJAMIN,
Late Missionary to Burmah.
Calcutta, N#v. 4, 1853.
Messrs. Ferry Davis S> Son: Dear Sirs —Confirming
my respects of tire 4th ult., (duplicates herewith) I hud it
necessary to address you again, as my most sanguine ex
pectionsbave been more than realized. The call tor your
valuable medicine is increasing so very rapidly that 1 tear
I shall soon be unable to keep pace with it, as I have only
about one hundred bottles of the supply per bnion on
hand, and hope that long ere this you have despatcued
me another package, of which, however, I have not yet
heard from you. I remain, dear sir,
Yours sincerely,

“TIMELY HINTS IQ ALL.’ 1
FRIENDS. —Reader, if you have a valued friend, in
whose welfare you feel an interest, that friend w ill
prize as a precious memorial your Ambrotype or Daguer
reotype picture—it taken in Woodbridge’s peculiar style.
TO ALL.—How many have lost a Father, a Mother, a
Sister, a Brother, or an innocent little prattling child ?
and have not even the shadow of a resemblance to look
upon. After the separation, some little toy or a trifling ar
ticle, is oiten kept for years, and cherished as a token of re
membrance;. How much more valuable would he one of
VVoodbridge’s perfect Daguerreotypes of “the loved and
lost ?”

PARENTS.— If you are still blessed with parents, and
no artist has or can trace the lineaments of his or her
familiar face or form, vou may well act the part of Milton,
to advise or persuade them to visit, without delay, the pal
ace rooms of WILLARD A: DEPEW, and have
their pictures taken in WOODBRIDGE’S new style.
For a Holiday Gilt, of all the rest,
A type ot yonrsetf is surely the best,
Then hie for Broadway No. eighty-two,
And get your picture ot Willard and Depew.
