Failure of the Atlantic Telegraph.
The Atlantic Telegraph Cable parted when the Aga
memnon was one thousand mile” from the coast of Ire
land.
The Niagara arrived at Queenstown on the sth :nsr.—
The abie parted on board the Agamemnon, the 29th of’
June, after 142 mile ■ bad Ik m laid. When the coramun- j
canon with the Agamemnon was cut off, the Niagara al
lowed swing (to her end of the cable, laud m addiuoa
ipoued a strain of four teas to the breaks. Although the
wind was blowing treh at the time, the cable ‘held up tor
an hour, when a sudden pitch broke it, and the Niagara
snaped her course tor Queenstown. If aotnmg should t ?
heard of the Agamemnon, alter coaling the Niagara will
proceed to mid ocean with the remaining thirteen hundred
mnesof cable still on Aboard. It is conjectured that the
Agamemnon will await the return of the Niagara.

The Panama Star and Herald furnishes the

Lieut. Wm. Gwin has been detacned from the
Saranac, and ordered to the Vandalia temporarily.
LieuL G. A- Nicholson, First Lieutenant Marines,
and three assistant engineers for the Saranac, ar
rived from New York by the last steamer. —
Purser Miles H. Morris also arrived, and joined
the Vandalia, in place of Purser Calvin Jackson.

.Hr. Editor : The rust or blight commenced in
several spot? in my best cotton in Jane. The
plants drop oed their leaves, and about three-fourths
of them died to the root. These plague spots
have confined to enlarge until many acres are now
rained, and if it continues, ray entire crop wul be
soon cut off. I have seen like appearance in one
cotton field in Barn well, and have beard several
1 persons complaining in Edgefield. It is thought to
be the same species which proved so dis
astrous to the oat crop. It is said to be upon the
xrase. in the pastures, und is suoposed to be the
cause of the pestilence among our eatrie.

He reports that spiders. Caro<ma tiger beetle, the
• predatory beetle, devil’s coach horse. Ichneumon
fiv, Syrphus, lady bird and the laeewing fiy are
very beneficial to the cotton plant, being constantly
engaged in destroying those insects which eat off the
cotton stalk and its product.
