GESTLE WORDS.
A young ro ia the summer time,
b hesantvl to me,
Aad % lor. oca the maay stars
That g.mam on me ia;
But zeaii* words aad iovxg hearts,
And hands to clasp my own,
Are better than the brgbrast flower?.
Or stars that ever abown.
The son mar war an the grass to Lie,
Tae dew the drooping dower,
Ani eye* grow br*h: and watch the 1 giK
Of autaraor* opening boon
Bavcrhi!mhcai of leader.**,
And smiles we know are true.
Are warmer than the summer tune,
And brighter than the dew.
It it not math the world can give,
Wah ail iu subtle art,
And gold or gems are not the things
To natasfy the heart.
Bet O, and those who cluster roaod
The altar and the hearth.
Have geode words and loving smiles,
How baanufnl m earth.
Pees£svtxg Buttes.—The farmers of Aber-
c ee*i, Scotland, are said to practice the following
metiiod for coring their hotter, which gives it a
gfeat superiority ever that of their neighbors :
“■rase two quirts of the best; common salt, one
oance of sugar, and, one of , saltpetre;’ uke one
ounce of tins composition ter one pound of butter;
w.rk well into thf mass and close n up for use.—
The batter cured wish this mixture appears of rich
and marrowT substance and tine rotor, and ac
quires a Uttie bardnes. Dr. Anderson says: *1
hare eaten the butter cured with the above com
position that has been kept for four years, and it
was as sweet as at first-’ It cast be noted, how
ever, that butter that is tfans cared requires to
stand three weeks ora mouth before it is used.—
If it is sooner opened, the sal* is not sufi> iexttij
blended with it, and sometimes the coolnes ot the
nitre will be preeeivwd. whica totally disappears
afterwards.”
Save t i|.
Yes. young man, save it. Put it in a sate place
and add to it often. We refer to the half dime you
were on the point of exchanging for a “drink.”
Get a stout box made, and whenever fou are
tempted to spend yonr coin for a useless indul
gence, drop it into the sa.d box instead, and listen
to its musical jingle. Afa! you have no idea
how three cent bits, and half dimes ard quarters
count up* But try this savings bank for a year,
and then count your com, and you will learn Low
much money yea might have wasted. And not
only wasted money but time—precious price'ess
time and formed habits of idffeuess and dissipation
which cl ngs to trie unfortunate possessor as the
fabled posonccs shirt of Nessus clung to him
who once put it on. Ves. save your money young
mac, and your leisure hours Tat home with your
mother and sisters, occupy yourself with earnest
and judicious study, and instead of being a hewer
of wood and a drawer of water, you will stand a
chance of taking rank with the great, prospered
and honored ones of the earth.
Love in the Cars.
The editor of the Hamsburg Telegraph is in
formed of a singular adventure which occuted on
the passenger tram of cais arriving at Harrisburg
from the East, on Saturday evening lust. Ia one
of the cars a young gentleman was seated, appar
ently deeply occupied ia readings book re held
ia his hand, got to Lancaster. At this
place a'very handsome young Lady entered the
cars and took her seat opposite to him. Before
they had been long in the train, the eyes of both j
met, and they recognized one another as old ac
quaintances when very young, having been sepa*
rated by their fk rents moving apart —those “of one
to the West, and the other to Philadelphia. The
two sooa became enrupt in ecmeet conversation,
fell ardently ; u love with one another, and by tee
time they arrived at Harrisburg, had resolved to be
united as man and wire and travel on their our
ney to the lady's home together. Accordingly
they took, lodgings at a hotel, *sent forfa minister,
aad were united in the bonds ot connub Ui bliss,
and taking the next train, were otf on their bridal
tour. The Te.egraphVinformant says be is ac
quainted with the parties, and that they both occu
py high positions in society. m
Tcwp.uk TH2 Alps. —France is determined

attempts achievements upon the land as remar

the latter is making an experiment with the monster
steamship, and the Atlantic Telegraph, France is
about to undertake the gigantic project of tunnel
ling the Alps. “Tats work,” savs the New York

by the force of compressed air the monarc as ot

BuctßESsr Bsastt.—The most singular sub
stance submitted to oar editorial inspection Lately
is a bottle of brandy, made oy Dr. Tsai: of this
village, of blackberries. I: is a Limpid, colorless
liquid, of moat agreeable odor and h : gh!y pungent
taste. It seems to be a decideily better brandy
than that made of the peach, and there is no nuor
difficahr in its roxnuiactuFe. It may be that the
blackberry will yet become oae of our most vaiuae
ble natural prod actions. In itself, it is a healthful,
almost a medicinal berry. The cordial and Hm*
made o! it are thought worthy ofa place among the
various preparations of the medical dispensary: and .
are do not see why blackberry brandy sh ui i net
also become a most useful well as very genial
drink. We trust our enterprising friend will push
the matter on to success. He thus perhaps
niarke an era in the bisrory snmmating beverages.
As at present tested, a bushel of blackberries will
make full half gallon of frst-ra'e liquor, without
the foreign aid of strychnine, or any other poi
sonous agent. —Edgefeid Advertiser.
A Kjowisg Beggas.—A begger posted
