THE CLEVELA M El ■v~„ DEVOTED TO THE MINING AGRICULTURAL AND BUSINESS INTERESTS OF WHITE COUNTY. Vol. I. RELIGIOUS COLUMN. POINTED PARAGRAPHS. BY REV. A. F. NUNN. “Religion never was designed to make our pleasures less." No, indeed, followers of Christ are the happiest people on the earth. Do you “pray without ceasing and in everything give thanks?” You ought to. Every church member ought to attend his church. When you joined the church you promised to “attend upon its ordinances.” When God says “ I he soul that sinneth it shall die,” He means it. “Let God be true and every man a liar.” God's word will stand when the roiling spheres are on tire. “Are you trying to “work out your own salvation?” God has put this precious thing in the woild, it isfor you to accept or reject. “Perfect love casteth out fear.” When pealing thunders crash and lurid lightnings flash the child of Jehovah feels no fear, when the arch angel sounds the funeral knell time, and true Christians are called the judgment, not a face will grow pale, not a muscle quiver. How pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity,” of what¬ ever denomination “ we he brethren." Of all abominable things, I most abhor the spirit of denominationalism. I think it right for one to prefer his own church to that of others. For me to say, “I just as soon be in one church for services as another ’’means about this :—“ I just as soon be with another man’s wife and children as my own ; I just as soon take Ichabod Flanigans baby on my knee as my own. I feel as much affection for Ahab Hamlin’s wife as I do for my own.” I know you will say “stuff!” yes such is mere “stuff” sure enough If you are a Baptist, be a Bap¬ tist. If you are a Methodist, be a good Methodist, etc. But here we mean by “denominationalism,” a spirit of quarreling and fussing over respective doctrines. Before I’d be guilty of such a thing and offend my brethren of other churches, I’d sooner pray for “my right hand to forget its cunning and my tongue to cleave to the roof of my mouth.” If you are guilty of flinging stones at other churches, quit it and go to fighting that horrible soul destroyer, sin. Fight sin. Fhe Church of God is not dead, nor dying. Pesimists think the world is becoming worse ; they think God’s church js dying. This is an idea born in sin and brought up in unbe¬ lief. Because God moves in a mys¬ terious way some people doubt; and they would doubt some things which are anxious or self-evident truths to other folks. We have not space to debate this question, but so sure as we live the church will carry life and light to all the world. -- The sun rose this morning on ihe brightest day CLEVELAND, GEORGIA, MAY 18, 1000. which has ever dawned. There has never been a better day since the morning stars sang together and the sons of God shouted over a new born world, never. Behind the dark cloud God’s sun is still shining. “Hail to the brightness of Zion’s glad Joy to the lands that in sorrow have lain, ’ Unshed be the accents of sorrow and mourning, Zion in triumph begins her mild reign. The Belled Buzzard. The men who put the bell on Georgia’s famous “belled buzzard” have been found—they are citizens of Athens. It's a dead sure thing, and the parties in question will make affidavit to the fact, if necessary. Several days since the Banner pub¬ lished an account of the capture of this famous bird which has been seen in various parts of south Georgia for over a quarter of a century. Mr. R. C. McAllister, of Fort Gaines, shot the bird, breaking its wing and cap¬ turing it. He made a request through the newspapers that the paities who belled the buzzard communicate with him at Fort Gaines. Jt develops that Messers George K. Smith, Cobb Davis and Jessie L. Jarrell were present at the belling of the buzzard, are acquainted with of the particulars thereof, and that the two first named gentlemen assist¬ ed in the work which made this member of the bird kingdom famous. Mr. Smith read the account pub¬ lished in the Banner and became in¬ terested. He hunted up Mr. Jarrell, wffio readily recalled the incident, and Mr. Davis, the third particeps crim inis, has also distinct recollection of the occasion. The story they tell is as In 1S63—thirty-seven years a company of Echols’ light artillery, from Oglethorphe county, was located at Camp Leon, a few miles from Tallahassee, Florida. Buzzards were plentiful, and one day several mem¬ bers of the company, including Messrs. Smith and Davis, set a “sapling trap” for the birds, using a tempting bait of spoiled meat. Ere long, a large buzzard was jerk¬ ed up. The men had no wish to kill him and it was decided to put a bell on him and let him go. This was done, and a bronze bell, answering almost exactly to the des¬ cription furnished almost exactly to the description furnished by Mr. McAllister, was tied to the bird’s neck. The buzzard soared away, the bell tinkling a merry accompani ment to the flapping of its Fully fifty men watched the bird rd fly fly off. Years passed, and the incident was forgotten. But reports of the appear¬ ance of a “ belled buzzard” came out from time to time. The question 1 was, “who belled the buzzard? The mystery ' is now - solved, - -t-i, lhat *. the . f two birds the . almost , are same is , a certainty. Buzzards live for almost a century, so thirty-five years is a small matter of time to them. The gentlemen in question are positive that the bell answers the description | of the one used by them, though they ! think that some date was cut on the leather thong, composing the collar. I 1 mu,.. f hey are now m • correspondence , with Mr McAllister and will see to it that Athens share in the belling of the celebrated belled buzzard is not over¬ looked.— Athens Banner.
