This country spent iast year
thirty-four milion dollars for chew¬
ing gum !
Three hundred and ten million
dollars upon moving picture shows 1
Two billion, seven hundred
million dollars for tobacco and
liquors!
Georgia’s share of the burden for
Army and Navy support in this
country amounts to seven million,
five hundred thousand debars
year.
Federal pension appropriations
taxes the people oF Georgia to the
amount, of five million, two
hundred thousand dollars.
Besides all this, Georgia bought
twenty-five million dollars worth
of automobiles last year.
And seventeen million dollars
went for insurance; or near $7.00
apiece!
We feel that we can pay all
these bills and more besides, be¬
cause our cotton crop this year is
worth one hundred and seventy
-five million dollars; or seventy-five
dollars apiece for every man, women
and child in the state!
But, as our Agricultural Commis¬
sioner says, “We raise bumper
crops of cotton, get fifteen cents n
pound for it, and are busted just
the same!”
It is the solemn truth!
But we are just now feeling the
flush of prosperity, and so nobody
is worring about the small cash bal¬
ance we have left when we get
through feeling chesty in the
Cotton Belt!—Home and Farm¬
stead.
Cigarette smoking is still on the
increase in this country, regardless
of the life-destroying effects it has
upon the smoker. In 1913 eleven
and a quarter billion cigarettes were
smoked in America, being an in¬
crease of over two billion over the
previous year.
At a recent conference it was dis¬
covered that all but two of the 100
ministers present were born and
raised in the country. What’s the
matter with the towns?

the editor of the Ninth district to
organize and regulate the price of
advertising. This is a matter that
will regulate itself The eeitor who
runs his paper on 5 cents an inch,
advertsing will soon run himself
into a hole so deep that nothing
can pull him out. A wellestablished
country newspaper, with twelve to
fifteen hundred intelligent subscrib¬
ers, ought to have 12 ceuts an inch
for its space. If it takes less than
tl>is it will have nothing for a rainy
day.—Alpharetta Free Press.

The only way to build up a town
is for everyone to go hand in hand
—every man to the wheel. Banish
all feelings of discord, if any; let

some good word to say, keep quiet.

A curious inquirer wants to
know “what are the sister states?”
and the brilliant country editor
answered.
We are not quite sure, but we
should judge that they are Miss

Della Ware, Minnie Sota and Mrs.
