We hear and we read much of
the suffering amongst the unfortun¬
ate in Belgium— that small but
once pretty and prosperous country
lying to t lie north of France.
Many there are cold and half-starv¬
ed because their little country lay
in the path of a mighty warrior to
the gates of Paris. Charitable
societies have done much to relieve
these sufferers. But those who
have given have given freely, and
the unfortunate there have been to
some extent relieved.
But- somebody is responsible for
all this suffering. Somebody is
responsible for the suffering of
everybody throughout the world.
The poor in the country usually
have wood to build fires, straw beds
to sleep upon, and a little bread
and meat the whole year round.
^.But while the poor efp their
bread and meat, sleep upon a straw
bed, and warm by their fire of logs,
perhaps their neighbors is gluton
ously dining under the radiant, light
of electrictrity, he sleeps upon a
bed that has cost him hundreds of
dollars, and lie enjoys the warmth
of a steam-heated residence.
By vvliat right does he do these
things? By what right, does he
live so much more in comfort than
his poor neighbor? Is it because
of t lie unWorthiness and slothful¬
ness of that neighbor? Nay, it is
because be lias used bis intellectual¬
ity to suppress and tyranically use
that neighbor, and extort from him
labor from which lie reaps a rich
harvest to feather his own nest,
regardless of how his laborer may
suffer. No man has the Divine
right to feel the pangs of hunger
more than his fellowman because of
his individual or collective ability
to crush the weak and the unintel¬
lectual.
Man should use his Codgiven in¬
tellectual faculties for the general
wellfare of humanity. Do you do
it?
