Barnett Will Not Fire
Engineers, Barnett Says
Talmadge Trys To Start
Huge Political Machine.
Atlanta, (la,, In a statement ad¬
dressed to the people of Georgia,
Chairman J, W. Barnett declared
‘■the State Highway Board could
not and will not agree to discharge
five engineers nor will it turn the
personnel of the ‘Highway Depart¬
ment ever to Governor Talmadge
and his associates.”
Chairman Barnett, in his state¬
ment, made the charge that Gover¬
nor Talmadge is seeking to cuilri
up a huge politicul machine by
placing the Highway Department
under the control of himself, C011
tractor Whitley and “Cowboy”
Smith, and declared that the gover¬
nor is afraid to call the Georgia
legislature into session. He pre¬
dicted that the next legislature will
amend the state law so that it can
call itself into extra session to
handle a situation similiur to the
existing now.
Barnett answered in detail re¬
cent criticism by Talmadge and
denied specifically the charges of
extravagance and inefficiency
Against the five engineers the chief!
executive seeks to remove. j
In hi* statement Chairman Bar-1
nett made the following declara¬
tions :
x. That the charges of ineffi¬
ciency against the five highway
engineers was an afterthought in¬
vented after the governor found he
was withoutjiiuthority to change
the personnel,
2. t{is only quoted witness has
been Cowboy Smith, an engineer j
employed by his (governor’s^friend :
and staff fappointee, Contractor,
Whitley, whose animosity to thpj
Highway Department is well!
known, as are the causes.
The governor’s instances of al¬
leged incompetence are shovvn t-.o
have no foundation in fact and to
be rqere figments of the imagina
ion.
4, The governor is attempting
to harass the ’Highway Hoard and j
impede its operations because lie;
was unable to cripp : e it by legis ;
■ ive action.
5. Die governor is attempting
to bui'd up a vast machine, politi¬
cal and otherw ise.
The Highway Department has,
lone everything it could amicably 1
o adjust the unfoi tqnatp situation
brought about by the vyillful act ot
Governor Talmadge,
Chairman Barnett sent a requisi
ion to iiie governor with a lettei
.titling that the money was needed
■:o relieve hundreds of employees
■vho have gone without pay since
April I and hundreds of convicts
whose maintenance has been taken
xver by the Highway Department.
The Barnett letter pointed out
hat no requisition was being made
to pay the five engineers, the gover¬
nor struck from the budget, but
aided that the board was making
no concession as to the right 01
tutliorjty of the governor to dis¬
charge these men,

Darwin, living in the world o!
Nature, saw the forms of life and
wondered how they originated. In
other words, he made certusu ob
servations and decided that evoiu j
tion by natural selection might be j
true. Remember, Darwin just
guessed. More than eight hundred ’
times lie said, “It might be
ble,” or “We may suppose,” or j
words to that effect.
I am not a scientist, but I know
more about science than the aver¬
;
age teacher of science knows about j
the Bible. I have had a good j
chance to make observations. I J
have preached in forty states for
more than twenty five years, and 1
have observed that the more the j
ev xlutionary hypothesis is
and believed, the less spiritual lift
people have. I am sure that Dar¬
win’s guess, which has been ac¬
cepted by some- unscientific men
who call themselves scientists, has
done more to wreck and damn
human souls than any other theon
for the last hundred years.
