RAINMAKER
It was not long after the expulsion
from Eden that man had to delve to
earn his bread. And from that time
on, there has been jio greater human
need than for a rainmaker.
em¬
ployed. Soothsayers have sought by
incantation to bring down a merciful
flow from heaven. Some have resoi't
ed to such practices as hanging a
defunct snake upon a limb. The god¬
ly, in times of searing drouth, have
gathered to pray but not always have
they exemplified their faith by carry¬
ing their umbrellas.
It is news, therefore, when the re¬
liable Associated Pi'ess brings word
from Arizona that science has made
a promising start toward creating
rain from passing clouds.
Here's how it happened. There was
a cloud about 20 miles long over the
Roosevelt Dam. Dr. Robert Hannelly,
dean of the Phoenix Junior college,
and Amos Hoff, teacher of physics,
rose above it in a plane chartered
for the purpose and dropped into the
cloud five batches of dry ice, in pel¬
let form, each batch weighing 100
pounds. The entire cloud was pre¬
cipitated, rain falling heavily for 25
minutes on the mountains behind
Lake Roosevelt.
With true scientific caution, Dr.
Hannelly says more trials must be
made, to be observed by experts, be¬
fore the experiment is to be accept¬
ed as anything more than an inter¬
esting incident. But Arizona is vi¬
brant with hope that soon there will
be developed a technique by which
all available cloud moisture may be
channeled into reservoirs where it
will be of most benefit.—The Atlanta
Journal.

Dear Jim:
Your telegram and subsequent let¬

Dr. Bennett to make his plans
to come to White County on the 22nd
for the clover festival. I hope he
will be able to make it, and I am
sure you will hear from him at an
early date.
I wish that I could be with you,
but I accepted an invitation some
time ago to go to Savannah on Au¬

clover festival, much to my regret.
I know you will have a fine meeting,
and I am glad that the prospects
seem so favorable for Dr. Bennett’s
acceptance.

The poultry business in North Geor
gia is now big business. However, it
is now finding itself confronted by
something alkin to gloom. It now
faces the problem of over-production.
A solution can be made if the Govern¬
ment will take poultry instead of
pork and beef for foreign relief, Too,
that will help to keep pork and beef
prices from going higher. The poul¬
try industry should continue to insist
that poultry supplant beef and pork
for foreign relief.
