Bacteria as Plant Food
Increases Grain Yield
The use of bacteria as food for
plants is the basis of a new prep¬
aration known as phosphorobacteria,
developed at *Leningrad institute.
Each gram of the preparation con¬
tains up to 200 million specially
cultivated bacteria, which on reach¬
ing the soil transform complex or¬
ganic matter containing phosphorus
into soluble salts from which the
plant can draw nourishment. The
bacteria increased crop yields.

Pessimism Prevails
/ T'HE month of August
1 marked the 10th anniver¬
sary of the soil conservation
program. During this decade
more than 1,900 conservation
districts ^have been organized by
farmers throughout the 48 states
for the purpose of conservation
practices on more than 190 million
acres of farm land. !
Despite these practices, the’drain
on soil fertility as a result of over¬
production of crops during the war
years and of natural causes finds
American farms in worse • shape
generally than before the war. 1
Soil conservation experts in
the department of agriculture
and in the local district com¬
mittees throughout the country
are pessimistic over the reduc¬
tion of approximately 86 million
dollars in payments to farmers
from the soil conservation serv¬
ice for 1948 as compared to
1947. The reduced appropria¬
tions made by congress not only
will cut payments to farmers
but also will cause the lay-off of
some 1,100 employees in the soil
conservation service.
So at a time when the farmer'and
the soil conservationist should, be
thinking and practicing more soil
conservation the agriculture depart¬
ment must necessarily retrench be¬
cause of the sapping of the program
by congress.
As an expression of gratitude
for aid received from the United
Nations Relief and Rehabilita¬
tion administration, a commer-.
cial, college in Brno, Czechoslcb
vakia, has formally adopted the
name “UNRRA Commercial col¬
lege.” Czechoslovakia received a
total of 8264,075,006 in aid under
the UNRRA relief program.
High and Dry
President Truman’s appointees to
the national labor relations board
were left high and dry by the sen¬
ate, which declined to confirm their
nominations. They are Robert N-;

and J. Copeland Gray of Buffalo, %..v

So although they must administer
the difficult Taft-Hartley .labor bill
along with the three other hold-over
members of the board, they don’t
know whether they will have a job
or not come next January, jit; may

The 79th congress' provided 75
million dollars for the school lunch
program throughout the dollarsinoTe country. It
also provided 6 million
as a deficiency appropriation, 'mak¬
ing a total of 81 million dolifter avail¬
able for school lunch programs in
1947. The 80th congress -slashed this
to 65 million dollars, so if (he. states
wish to provide school lurches on
the same basis as in 1947 they will
have to make up that deficiency of 16
million dollars from local.funds and
local taxes. -■

‘Don’t Fence Me In*
^EN. W. Lee (Pappy) O’fianiel of

Slash in Workers
The slash in the department of
agriculture’s budget will mean- a
lay-off of approximately 13,70fi em¬
ployees in the department. Al¬
though at the beginning of this year
Secretary Anderson had reduced
personnel of the department 10,000
below the prewar figure and his
budget as originally sent to con¬
gress provided for a further reduc¬
tion of 9,100, the slashes made by
congress will add approximately
4,600 more lay-offs.
