6-CENT HORMONE PILL
COMBATS HEART ILLS
Herald Tribune News Service
A couple of years ago, Dr. Jessie
Marmorston offered men a six-cent
female hormone pill to prevent se¬
cond heart attacks. It seemed to
work. Now she says she has con¬
firmed the effect and what is more
the pill — premarin — appears to
protect men against stroke.
Dr. Marmarston and her colleagu¬
es at the University of Southern
California Medical School gave test
groups of men such low doses of
premarin that they felt none of its
feminizing effects no high pitched
voice, no tenderness in the breast,
no atrophy of the reproductive
glands and no loss of libido.
IF OTHER scientists check out
these results, Dr. Marmorston and
her associates will have the first
practical and cheap preventative for
both heart attacks and strokes.
Dr. Marmorston and her associa¬
tes,, Dr. Oliver Kuzma, Dr. Frede¬
rick J. Moore, Dr. Carl E. Hopkins
and John S. Weiner, a statisticians,
are at a loss as to why the pill
works.
NEITHER of two other female
sex hormones — enthinyl estradiol
and anvene — protected at all in
the doses given control groups—

SET UP OWN SCHOOL
FARMVILLE Va., July 6 (UPI)
—Negro leaders said Thursday about
400 of Prince Edward County’s 1,600
Negro students have enrolled in
special summer classes taught by
volunteer teachers.
The students had been without
formal schooling since the county
abandoned public education In 1959
to avoid court-ordered desegrega¬
tion. Most of the county’s 1,500 white
children have attended private
schools since the shutdown.
PINEY WOODS PETE Says:
DEAR MR. EDITOR:
A 22-year-old dancer was hailed
into court In a big city the other
day for carrying a pen-type tear gas
gun for her own protection.
The prosecutor argued that pos
ession without a license violated the
weapons law. Her attorney replied
the gun could not fire a bullet, but
only a tear gas pellet and was “use¬
ful to women who have a right to
protect themselves against molest
ers. The judge dismissed the case.
Going home alone late at night
can be hazardous for working girls,
for dimly lit city streets, I’ve heard,
are favorite lurking places for
wolves who believe in Life, Liberty,
and Happiness of Pursuit.’ -
Yours truly,
PINEY WOODS PETE.
