JCMS students receive gift of books Townsend Press, an educa tional publisher, has donated a set of eight novels. The Bluford Se ries, to every student at Jenkins County Middle School (JCMS), to help students build their own personal reading library. Popular nationwide, the Bluford books are set in urban America and address issues rel evant to today’s young people. Praised by parents, principals, educational journals, and school districts across the US, the Bluford Series books make kids want to read. JCMS students have enjoyed following the characters' stories from one book to the next. The students are reading these novels independently and as a class and taking comprehension tests in the Accelerated Reader program. Townsend Press and the staff of JCMS want students to expe rience the pleasure of reading for its own sake. Reading indepen dently promotes concentration, improves vocabulary and en hances writing. (Photo contributed) JCMS holds Valentine’s Sweetheart Ball On Friday, Feb. 13, Jenkins County Middle School (JCMS) eight grade teachers will be sponsoring a Sweetheart Ball for students enrolled in grades 6-8. The event will be held in the old high school gym 6-8:30 p.m. Tickets for the event may be purchased from homeroom teachers for a cost of $30 per couple and $20 for single ad mission. Tickets will be sold in advance only beginning Mon day, Jan. 12 and ending Thurs day, Feb. 5. Parents may pur chase a ticket to the event from the school for $10. Invited guests of JCMS students must also be enrolled in a middle school and must present his or her school identification along with the ticket purchased for entry to the event. No tickets will be sold at the door. Dress is formal; however. school dress code will be en forced at all times during the event. Please plan and dress ac cordingly. Refreshments and the services of a DJ are in cluded in the price of a ticket. A professional photographer will be available to take pho tographs for an additional charge. All school rules apply and will be enforced during the event. Library News By Sharon Blank The library will be closed Monday, Jan. 19, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so come in now to stock up for the long weekend! Wednesdays are wonderful! Every Wednesday at 4 p.m., we have our great story time for the little ones. They can come in, listen to a fun story and do a fun craft project related to the story. They’re really cute (just like your kids!) and a great way to brighten up a room or refrig erator. Today, Wednesday Jan. 14, at 4 p.m., the Teen Book Club will be meeting. If you’re between the ages of 12 and 18, come join us! The Screven-Jenkins Re gional Library Board will be meeting at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Jenkins County Library. All qualified voters desiring to vote in favor of imposing the 1% sales and use tax for educational purposes (the "Educational Sales Tax”) shall vote "Yes” and all qualified voters opposed to levying the Educational Sales Tax shall vote “No.” If more than one-half of the votes cast are in favor of imposing the Educational Sales Tax then such tax shall be imposed beginning July 1, 2010 or the first day of the calendar quarter following termination of the Ed ucational Sales Tax presently in effect in Jenkins County and shall cease to be imposed on the earlier of (a) twenty cal endar quarters after the tax is imposed or (b) as of the end of the calendar quarter during which the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Revenue determines that the Educational Sales Tax will have raised revenues sufficient to provide to the School District net pro ceeds equal to or greater than the amount specified as the maximum amount of net proceeds to be raised by the Educational Sales Tax. 3. The School District heretofore has issued its $5,050,000 in principal amount JENKINS COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT GENERAL OBLIGATION BOND, SERIES 2005 (the “Series 2005 Bond”) for the purpose of financing cap ital outlay projects of the School District, as authorized by a majority vote of qual ified voters in Jenkins County voting in an election held March 15, 2005. If re imposition of the Educational Sales Tax is approved by the voters of Jenkins County on March 17,2009 and imposed beginning July 1, 2010, proceeds to be received from the Educational Sales Tax of approximately $3,160,195 shall be used to pay principal of and interest coming due on the Series 2005 Bond through December 1,2015, which is the final maturity date for the Series 2005 Bond. The School District may apply interest earnings or other funds avail able in the debt service account main tained for the outstanding Series 2005 Bond to assist in the retirement of such bond. 4. In addition to the retirement of the Series 2005 Bond, the Board of Educa tion expects to use proceeds from the Educational Sales Tax to fund all or a portion of various capital outlay projects, including architectural and engineering fees and necessary contingencies throughout the Jenkins County School System, including (i) construction and renovation of athletic facilities at the Jenkins County High School including, but not limited to, new track improve ment, (ii) acquisition of school busses and other necessary personal property and equipment and (iii) acquisition of computers and related technology and safety and security upgrades. 5. To the extent available, the School District may combine available funds from the State of Georgia with proceeds from the Educational Sales Tax, and any other available funds, to pay the costs of the above described capital outlay projects. Plans and spec ifications for these projects have not been completed, and bids have not been received. Depending upon acqui sition and construction costs and avail able funds, the School District may es tablish or reestablish priorities and choose which capital outlay projects to undertake or not undertake, or to delay until additional funding is available, to the extent that proceeds of the Educa tional Sales Tax, together with other available funds actually received by the School District, are insufficient to com plete all of the capital outlay projects. 6. The last day to register to vote in the election is Tuesday, February 17, 2009. Anyone desiring to register may do so by applying in person at the voter registration office located at the Jenkins County Courthouse, Millen, Georgia, or by any other method authorized by the Georgia Election Code. 7.
