Ag Line: Milorganite Repellent for Deer
By Wade Parker
County Extension Coordinator
A growing human population is
leading to increased land develop
ment. Many home- owners main
tain gardens and landscapes
around their homes. Often wild
life and humans come into con
tact with each other, resulting in
damage to human property. Often
in these cases, intensive deer man
agement is needed.
White-tailed deer provide aes
thetic and economic value, but
deer can cause a variety of nega
tive economic impacts. Deer can
damage personal property, agro
nomic crops, landscape plantings,
and food plots; and they serve as a
host for diseases common to live
stock and humans. Unlike some
nuisance animals (fire ants, ter
mites or rats, for example), deer
cannot be casually eliminated
when conflicts arise. Landowners
are often expected to carry the en
tire burden of support for this pub
lic resource. Deer damage control
can be a difficult social and politi
cal problem, as well as a biologi
cal and logistical one. Scare de
vices, repellents, and shooting are
all considered effective strategies
to control deer damage.
Many homeowners would like
an inexpensive but effective con
trol method to safely reduce deer
damage. Repellents are often used
intensively around orchards, gar
dens, ornamental plants, and ag
ronomic crops. New repellents
continue to enter the market, but
Each year we make - and often
break - New Year’s resolutions to
do things like stop smoking, lose
weight and save money. However,
the Georgia Emergency Manage
ment Agency’s (GEMA) “Ready”
campaign reminds Georgians
there is a resolution that we all
need to keep: be prepared for an
emergency.
“January brings winter storms
with ice, snow and potential power
outages,” says GEMA Director
Charley English. “Don’t wait for
someone else to take care of you
and your family; now is the time
to plan and prepare.”
Being “Ready” for emergencies
can be an easy new year’s resolu
tion to keep by following “Ready
Georgia’s” three simple steps: get
an emergency supply kit; make a
family emergency plan; and be
infoimed about the types of emer
gencies that can happen in your
area, and their appropriate re
sponses.
By taking these three steps - in
particular - having an emergency
supply kit both at home and in the
car - Georgians will be prepared
The New Year's holiday travel
period ended at midnight Sunday,
Jan. 4, with 20 traffic deaths re
ported to the Georgia State Patrol
over the 102-hour period. The traf
fic deaths were recorded in 17 fa
tal crashes that occurred between
6 p.m. New Year’s Eve and mid
night Sunday.
Traffic estimates for the holiday
period from the Georgia State Pa
trol and the Crash Reporting Unit
at the Georgia Department of
Transportation had been for 3,008
traffic crashes, 1,350 injuries and
20 traffic fatalities. During the
2007-08 New Year’s holiday travel
ence on events than a room full
of governors and senators.
As a key adviser to Gov. Ernest
Vandiver, Bell helped devise a
strategy that allowed the gover
nor to skip his campaign pledge
to close the schools rather than
allow integration. Bell conspired
with Atlanta’s and Georgia’s
elected leaders to help the Peach
State become the most progres
sive of the Old Confederacy bloc.
As a result, Atlanta prospered as
never before.
Bell co-chaired the 1960 Geor
gia presidential campaign of John
F. Kennedy. It was the last time
Democrats would score such a
resounding triumph in Georgia,
as they carried the state for
Kennedy by an even greater mar
gin than Kennedy took Massa-
their effectiveness varies. Success
is determined based on the reduc
tion of damage, not total elimina
tion. Repellents generally rely on
fear, pain, taste, or conditioned
avoidance to change deer behav
ior. Three methods used to deliver
repellents: incorporated into the
plant (systemic delivery), spread
throughout an area (area delivery),
and applied to the plant (contact
delivery). The effect of repellents
varies depending on several fac
tors including deer density, alter
nate food sources, and changes in
plant palatability. Milorganite®
has been suggested as an area re
pellent for use in the spring and
summer in Georgia to control deer-
damage. UGA has tested the ef
fectiveness of Milorganite® on
ornamental plants. The specific
objective of this study was to de
termine the effectiveness of
Milorganite® as a temporary deer
repellent when applied to estab
lished ornamental plants during
the summer.
About Milorganite®
In 1913, the legislature in Wis
consin passed an act to create a
sewage commission responsible
for cleaning up the waterways.
During the same year, a chemist
in Birmingham, England was con
ducting experiments with the
biosludge in sewage. The Milwau
kee Sewage Commission adopted
this new process for use on De
cember 31, 1919. Jones Island, on
the shore of Lake Michigan, was
chosen as the site of the world’s
for potential winter power outages
and icy roads. Each of these kits
should include basic necessities
such as water, food and first aid
supplies to help you survive if you
are without power or become
stranded in your vehicle.
The "Ready Georgia” Web site
(www.ready.ga.gov) provides
online step-by-step tools that en
able you to create a custom pre
paredness plan and emergency
supply kit. You can create a per
sonal profile with basic family
member information (medical in
structions, pets) and contact infor
mation (work, school, emergency
contact and meeting place.) After
you create your profile, a custom
checklist and plan will be gener
ated with recommended amounts
of food and water your family will
need to survive for 72 hours, along
with a personal emergency com
munication plan with specific
meeting places.
“Remember, 70 percent of fa
talities related to ice and snow oc
cur in automobiles, and approxi
mately 25 percent of all winter-
related fatalities are people caught
first large-scale activated sludge
treatment plant, the Jones Island
Wastewater Treatment Plant. The
main purpose of the Jones Island
plant was to produce clean water,
but they were faced with the prob
lem of disposing of the biosolids
left from the activated sludge pro
cess. The Milwaukee Metropoli
tan Sewerage District (MMSD) es
tablished a fellowship at the Uni
versity of Wisconsin College of
Agriculture to investigate uses of
activated sludge as fertilizer. O. J.
Noer was the primary investiga
tor. After experimenting with field
crops and vegetables, Noer fo
cused on the use of the organic
fertilizer on lawns. Based on his
research. Noer concluded that the
organic, slow release fertilizer can
be safely applied to plants with
out the risk of bunting, while pro
viding long-lasting results. The
trade name, Milorganite®, was de
rived from MILwaukee ORGAnic
NTTrogEn. This product is often
used for soil amendment purposes
rather than as a fertilizer because
of the low Nitrogen-Phosphorus-
Potassium (N-P-K) values of 6-2-
0. The cost, 40-pound bag, usu
ally runs from $7.00 to $10.00.
Milorganite® is commercially
sold by fertilizer dealers through
out the United States.
