Commissioners approve repairs to Confederate Monument By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor The Confederate Monument on the lawn of the Jenkins County Courthouse will soon get needed repairs, thanks to the efforts of the Georgia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). The Jenkins County Commissioners approved the group’s request for permission to repair and clean the monument during their Tuesday, Jan. 20, meeting. Judy Womack of the UDC reported that the estimated cost of repairs would be $2,500 and that her group would immedi ately begin obtaining funds for the effort upon approval of the project. Following completion of the project, a dedication cer emony will be held. The commissioners also ap proved changes to the county policy manual regarding em ployee health insurance. Newly hired employees will be eligible for health insurance upon 90 days of employment. The pre vious time frame had been one year. Needed requirements to meet the county’s subdivision ordi nance at the Carlton Oaks Sub division were discussed with developer Jerry Jennings. Mr. Jennings is to report back to the commissioners when the re quirements have been met. A new county logo was ap proved with all five entries be ing declared winners and re ceiving $25 each. The new logo is comprised of parts of all five entries. Other actions taken by the commissioners included the following: • Approved the location on the courthouse lawn of a War Memorial Monument by the lo cal VFW chapter; • Approved the advertisement of bids for needed repairs at the Jenkins County Memorial Li- brary; • Approved pipe purchase by Jenkins County Board of Edu cation at cost; • Denied a request from a lo cal organization for waiver of rental fee at Jenkins County Senior Citizen Center; and • Determined that a transpor tation service request did not apply regarding services pro vided by the Jenkins County Transit system. ARCHTTECTUAL BID REQUEST Jenkms Counlv Board or Commissioners This is the new county logo approved by the Jenkins County Commissioners last week. ECHD to conduct anthrax exercise here The East Central Health Dis trict (ECHD), the Jenkins County Health Department and the Jenkins County Medical Re serve Corps (MRC) will con duct a “Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) Anthrax Drive- Thru Full Scale Exercise” Sat urday, May 30, at the Jenkins County High School, 433 Barney Avenue. This will be the first drive- thru exercise conducted in the ECHD. This event will test the ability of the district, Jenkins County Health Department and Jenkins County Medical Re serve Corps to respond to an anthrax event affecting Jenkins County residents. Also, this event will meet the requirements set by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for the distribution of medical supplies through the Strategic National Stockpile. Additionally, this ex ercise through the Medical Re serve Corps recruitment efforts that will be on-going will help build support for any event/di saster on a cataclysmic level that could occur in Jenkins County. A key component in prepar ing for any disasters - either man-made or natural - is recruit ing volunteers to assist and sup port response and recovery ef forts. A community orientation on this exercise and the need for volunteers will be held noon - 1 p.m. Feb 11, at Cindy’s Res taurant, 535 Cotton Avenue. It’s the day before we inaugurate Barack Obama as our 44 th president, but it’s also Dr. Martin Futher King Jr. Day. I can’t think of a better way to honor Dr. King than by spend ing time doing something nice for others, and there’s no one who deserves it more than the men and women who serve our country in uniform. I’m grateful to Mayor Fenty and Operation Gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of something so mean ingful.” Since 1994, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service has chal lenged Americans to transform the King holiday into a day of volunteer service in honor of Dr. King. “A Day of Service for Our Military” is a joint effort between Operation Gratitude, an organi zation that sends care packages to our troops stationed overseas, Washington D.C. Held at Southeastern Tech’s campus, over 175 employees at tended to learn of merger plans. “I feel there is strength in numbers. Together, we can of fer our students more. I believe that the merger between these two great schools is going to cre ate an even stronger college that helps the economic develop ment of our communities,” said Dr. Cathryn Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell, who was se lected by the State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia to serve as president of the merged colleges, announced the vice presidents. Teresa Coleman will serve as vice presi dent of academic affairs; Denise Powell, vice president of admin istrative services; David Yarbrough, vice president of economic development; Gail Ware, vice president of institu tional effectiveness; and Dr. Barry Dotson, vice president of student services. Farry Calhoun, current president of Swainsboro Tech, will serve as provost for the college. The merged college will serve Candler, Emanuel, Jenkins, Johnson, Montgomery, Tattnall, Toombs and Treutlen counties. The two colleges will offi cially merge on Wednesday, July 1. An official name has not been decided yet. The Board of Di rectors for each college met jointly on Thursday, Jan. 22, to decide on a name.
