Syl-View Happenings
By Betty Scarborough
There has been excitement in
the air at Syl-View for weeks, as
we celebrated the moments of
our lives.
“Hat Day” was a fun-filled day
as residents, volunteers and staff
wore hats for the party. Glen
Walden and Vicki Bragg pro
vided the entertainment with
country music. The residents en
joyed eating home-baked cake.
There was chocolate, red velvet,
coconut and pound cakes to se
lect from. They drank coffee or
milk with the cake, which was
baked by Ada Teston of the nurs
ing staff.
We had a Martin Luther King
celebration, and the community
joined the residents for a pro
gram which was planned and di
rected by Jerry Hunter, Syl-View
volunteer. There was special
music and speeches for inspira
tion. It is a dream of mine, which
has come true, as residents and
community gather together for
special events being led by com
munity volunteers. Following the
service, those attending were
treated to refreshments as they
enjoyed fellowship.
The Betty Carpenter Mission
Group of the First Baptist Church
of Sylvania met at Syl-View re
cently. This group provides sup
port for the activity program.
Following Bingo recently, we
celebrated the 89 th birthday of
Anita Thompson. Ms. Thomp
son has been active in the vol
unteer program at Syl-View
since the doors opened in 1969.
Her grandmother was one of the
first residents to call Syl-View
home. Ms. Thompson has re
ceived local and state honors for
her volunteer service, and she
was one of the "Bingo Angels”
receiving national honors last
year. Volunteers and staff ex
pressed appreciation for her
faithful volunteer service and
friendship. Ms. Thompson re
ceived a bouquet of flowers and
gifts as the group enjoyed cake,
party sandwiches, tart shells
filled with chicken salad and
lemonade.
We celebrated Chinese New
Year with hats, decorated fans
and parasols. There was fun and
laughter as fortune cookies were
broken and fortunes read. Good
luck was wished for all.
We recently traveled to Atlanta
as Amanda Long, State Teen Vol
unteer of the Year, and Memo
rial Mission Group, who are
State Volunteer Group of the
Year, were honored and recog
nized as "Stars of Long Term
Care.” We were thrilled to be a
part, and grateful for our volun
teers.
I was grateful for the Activity
Appreciation Party given by Toni
Ellison to honor the Syl-View
activity staff. It is a privilege to
work in activities, and I am grate
ful for 27 years of service at Syl-
View.
Come and visit us soon.
