Taxpayers affected by
storms
Taxpayers impacted by severe
storms in Georgia last year can
increase their standard deduc
tion by claiming their net disas
ter losses suffered from a fed
erally declared disaster.
A new tax law called the Na
tional Disaster Relief Act allows
all taxpayers, not just those who
itemize, to claim the casualty
loss deduction regardless of the
taxpayer’s adjusted gross in
come level. To take the deduc-
deduct
tion, taxpayers must reside in a
federally declared presidential
disaster area. Additionally, the
law waives a requirement lim
iting casualty losses to those that
exceeded 10 percent of the
taxpayer’s adjusted gross in
come.
Last year, on May 11, the fed
eral government declared
Jenkins County as a federal di
saster area.
Most taxpayers have a choice
losses
of either claiming the standard
deduction or itemizing their de
ductions. If you have a choice,
you can use the method that
gives you the lower tax.
Taxpayers may download
forms and publications from the
official IRS website, irs.gov, or
order them by calling 1(800)
TAX-FORM (1(800) 829-
3676.) The IRS toll-free num
ber for general tax questions is
1(800) 829-1040.
