In Memoriam
Loving Memories of
Pete Royal
6-14-1943 - 2-15-2008
Let me tell you the story of a little red barn.
Pete had picked out a place out on his farm.
There was much hard work to be done by hand.
So the little red barn could be placed on landscaped land.
An idea one day he shared with me.
That by himself was where he wanted to be.
As far as his two eyes could see.
Was a reminder of all the good things Jesus did for me.
Sitting by his pond on a moonlit night,
Watching the deer play, oh what a sight.
Watching the night creatures run to and fro
Made him want to stay there so much more.
During the end, he also realized
What matters was not years or differences.
But only love, and knowing Jesus.
Pete never lived long enough to see his dream come true.
But when I see the red barn he showed me he was going to buy.
Many memories of his life will never die.

Being virtuous entails always doing the right thing with no expectation of reward, and still
doing it happily, and yet without becoming attached to these good deeds. This
requires three things: wisdom, character, and the ability to be detached from our
deeds. It requires wisdom because doing the right thing is not always a simple matter.
We can have a conflict between principles which may make it hard to know which
principle should take priority. For instance, we might have a situation when we must
decide between telling the truth and thereby hurting someone’s feelings or telling a lie to
spare their feelings. Wisdom is the ability to judge right from wrong, and then to always
do right. Doing the right thing requires doing right to the right person, at the right time
and, to the right degree. The cultivation of virtue also requires character, because it
requires strength of will as well as a good nature to do the right thing even in spite of
difficulties and temptations to take the easy way out. Finally, we should be virtuous but
without becoming attached to our good deeds. Persons who do good deeds but who are
puffed up with pride, tarnish their good deeds by calling into question their very moti
vation for doing them. Plowever, a person who crowns a life of devoted service to others
with a humble countenance, gleams like the sun.
