Step Up, Stand Out is the theme this year and more than half a million members around the nation will partici pate in National FFA Week ac tivities at the local and state lev els. Stepping up and standing out is not only a way of life for FFA members, but it’s also a call to action for others. FFA mem bers set a positive example with their leadership, work ethic and community service activities. Step Up and Stand Out, Jenkins Future The focus of National FFA Week is to tell America about the great opportunities available for youth in agriculture. From its beginnings in 1928 as the Future Farmers of America, the National FFA Organization to day reaches out to all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Is lands. From urban to rural schools. FFA is committed to developing character and lead ership skills and preparing members for a lifetime of suc cess in one of the 300 careers in agriculture. FFA members are success-ori ented students who are driven to achieve their goals and be the leaders of tomorrow. They stand out by recognizing the impor tance of being active in their schools and communities and are urged to step up when vol unteers are sought, friendship is needed and leadership is re quired. Through classroom instruc tion and hands-on learning, ag ricultural education and FFA are making a positive difference for members every day. FFA mem bers have opportunities to at tend national leadership confer ences, develop a supervised ag ricultural experience project, learn life skills and serve their communities with civic engage ment. FFA members are our fu ture engineers, scientists, teach ers and producers. One of ev ery five Americans is employed in the food, fiber and natural resources industries of agricul ture and JCHS’s FFA members are the future of these important industries. FFA members compete in Tractor Driving Contest Jenkins County High School FFA members Derek Mcleod and Ashlee Rhodes recently competed in the Area IV Tractor Driving and Lawn Mower Operations CDEs held at Metter High School. In this contest Derek and Ashlee were required to demonstrate gen eral knowledge of tractor and lawn mower operations and maintenance in a written test. They also had to verbally answer questions about safety and mainte nance, and take a written test over a service manual. In addition to the written and ver bal portions of the competition, they had to demonstrate safe and precise driving on an obstacle course within a certain time frame. Derek finished 7 th overall in the tractor driving competition, and Ashlee finished 5 th in the lawn mower competition. They competed against 12 other schools. While there, students toured exhibits relating to all areas of Agriculture. Members viewed SAE projects, Livestock Show animals, and agriculture products that are all very important in today’s agriculture society.
