Page 8 — Wednesday, March 4, 2009, The Millen News Jenkins County 4-H shines bright Recently, 4-H Junior and Se nior District Project Achieve ment was held. Jenkins County was well represented with 12 Juniors (7-8 grades) and 10 Se niors (9-12 grades) competing at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton. In the junior division, seven of the 12 placed in the top three. Winners and their projects were as follows: first place, Ametria Hills - Safety and Kristin McLamb - Crafts; second place, Jamiah Scott - Computers and Tyler Taylor - Wildlife; third place, Juan Vasquez - Dairy Foods, Jay Burton - Food for Health and Sport and Byron Wil liams - History. In the senior division, four of 10 placed. First place winners were: Krysten Fail - Arts and Crafts, Krista Gay - Food Fast and Fit, FaVonte Fovette - Health and Justin Fanier - Hous ing Equipment and Environ ment. First place winners in the senior division will go on to compete at State Congress in July. State Congress is where the top placed individuals in each of the four districts come together to compete for state honors. Participants in DPA and their projects were: Kayla Hendley - Better Breakfast, Sarah Beth Cates - Companion Animals, Jamiah Scott - Computers, Kristin McFamb - Crafts, Juan Vasquez - Daily Foods, Jay Bur ton - Food for Health & Sports, John Bell - Health, Byron Will iams - History, Fani Arthur - Outdoor Recreation, Arnetria Hills - Safety, Brandon Cherry - Sports, Tyler Taylor - Wildlife, Krysten Fail - Arts & Crafts, Marshella Herrington - Com puter, Chassity Wilkerson - Dog Care & Training, Mason Davis - Festive Foods for Health, Emiliy English - Food Fare, Krista Gay - Food Fast & Fit, LaVonte Fovette - Health, Jus tin Fanier - Housing Equipment & Environment, Breezie Joiner - Human Development and Walter Ivy - Sports. Two 4-H’ers were elected to Junior and Senior District Board. They were Brandon Cherry and LaVonte Lovette. This was a great accomplishment for these young 4-H’ers because they were both elected as District Presidents. The first Dairy Judging prac tice will be Monday, March 2, right after school at the 4-H of fice. MCG accepts Brannen in OT program The Medical College of Geor gia (MCG) recently announced that Marie Brannen has been ac cepted to the Master of Health Sci ence in Occu- p a tio n al Therapy (OT) pro gram in the School of Al lied Health Sciences, be ginning in the fall semester. She plans to pursue a doctorate in the research program at MCG. MCG’s requirements include: 90 credited hours at a previous university; a minimum 3.0 GPA; a 900 or higher graduate record exam (GRE); observation/volun teer work; and an interview pro cess that includes a group activity, a personal essay and an individual interview. The OT program consists of 36 applicants selected from a pool of 250. Classes are set to begin Mon day,Aug. 17. The program will last six semesters (two years); and a doctorate requires an additional four semesters. Brannen is a 1994 graduate of Jenkins County High School. She graduated The University of Geor gia in 1998 with a bachelor of arts in journalism. She is the daughter of Angie Brannen of Millen, and the niece of Charlotte and Troy “Kenny” Laircey of Statesboro. To commemorate her accep tance, Brannen’s mother is heat ing her to a luxurious weekend celebration in New York City.
