The county’s current 7-cents sales tax will remain the same if the refer endum receives voter approval. The present ESPLOST was originally passed in 2005, for a 5- year period, along with approval of the issuance of general obliga tion bonds by the Jenkins County Board of Education. The sale of bonds allowed the school system to obtain immediate funding for planned capital improvement projects rather than having to wait for ESPLOST funds to accumulate. It was noted then that a second referendum would be needed in order to generate sufficient rev enue to pay off the bonds as they matured over a 10-year period. The maximum amount of revenue that could be collected by re newal of the ESPLOST has been set at $5,258,175. Advance and absentee voting in the election has been underway for several weeks with officials reporting that voter turnout has been slow thus far. Anyone who was registered to vote as of Feb. 17 may cast a ballot in this election. Voters do not have to give a reason for voting absentee when voting in person or by mail.
