A Take An Interest In Others
Since most people would rather talk about themselves, than listen to others, many conver
sations tend to be rather self-centered, with each party to the conversation trying to
outdo the others in their attempt to convince everyone how grand they are. However,
f it we really want to be the “star” of the conversation, we should stop thinking about
what we will say next and really listen to the people we are talking to. And, when there is a
ull in the conversation, instead of jumping right in with our own story, we can talk about the
Dther person or ask them questions about what they may have just told us. This is more
than just good advice about how to keep a conversation going; it is a good interpersonal
skill, and one way in which we can display a genuine interest in others. When I was in
graduate school, one of my best friends, Ed, who incidentally was very well-liked by
almost everybody, had a conversational habit of asking lots of questions. He was always
asking people about their jobs, their hobbies, and their interests. And, since Ed was genu-
about what other people were doing with their lives, his questions never came across as intrusive or
contrary, most people really enjoyed talking to him because he seemed to be genuinely interested in
know how flattering it can be when someone takes an interest in us, so we should return the favor
interest in others.
So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; (or this is the law and the prophets.
