The day didn’t start out like any other for Jenkins County High School (JCHS) students April 16. as they witnessed a mock car crash and heard speak ers with a tragic story to tell. The mock car crash, Ghost Out 2009, was to prepare stu dents for their prom night Sat urday, April 18. It was con ducted to reinforce to them the dangers of mixing alcohol with driving. The exercise, which ran from 9 to 9:45 a.m. was open to the community and was attended by all JCHS students. The program recounted details of what is in volved in an alcohol-related crash. The scene was realistic, com plete with police, emergency re sponders, wrecked cars, a drunk driver and even fatalities. As stu dents looked on, they saw their friends injured and sent to the hospital in ambulances, one stu dent extracted with the jaws of life and one student transported in the Air Med helicopter from Doctors Hospital in Augusta. But the most dramatic event was students observing the lifeless body of a classmate being pulled from the wreckage and a white sheet placed over the body.
