Recreation Department news
By Lisa Dailey
On Thursday, April 2, when I
drove up to work around 8 a.m., it
was flooding. It looked liked the
beach on a cold winter’s day. I
stepped out of my truck; the water
went over my shoes. It rained all
day; we had a coaches meeting that
night. I left about 7:30 p.m. to head
home, and it was still raining. As I
was leaving I looked over at field
# 4 and Coach Clark was out there
in all the rain with a pump trying
his best to stay ahead of the rain.
I was thinking to myself, if it
keeps raining through the night
and into the morning, I’m not sure
if we will be able to have opening
day. I finally told myself there was
nothing I could do but leave it up
the Lord. When I came in on Fri
day, morning, the water was
backed up on the football field
from one end to the other. On fields
# 3 and # 4, the fields the school
plays on, you really needed a life
boat, and it would happen that C-
Team and Varsity had games that
day that could not be rescheduled.
So about 9 a.m. Jeff Joyner came
into the office to pick up informa
tion for his team. As we were talk
ing, I said, “You wouldn’t happen
to have a pump I could borrow?”
He said, "No but Cecil Walters
does.”
He picked up his phone, called
Cecil and asked if the recreation
department could borrow it? Cecil
said, “Just tell her that it needs
some gas and I’m on my way with
it.”
In about 30 minutes Cecil was
here at the office wanting to know
where to start. On field # 4 Coach
Clark was still pumping and push
ing water. Cecil went to the foot
ball field and starting pumping
while I ran to get gas. When I came
back, we were working trying to
get the water off. Bobby Walker
stopped by to help us; they worked
to get the drain open, and we
pumped water all day. We just
moved the water from the fields
to the drainage area. I’m not sure
how many gallons we pumped. I
looked over on field # 4, Matt
Brinson was out there in all that
water with his loafers and dress
slacks pushing water. He also
called the city to borrow a bigger
pump. On field # 2 and # 3, Bear
(James Walton) was shoveling
sand as fast as he could load it. We
finally stopped pumping water
about 3:30 p.m. that day, and
somehow we were able to play ball
on field # 3 and # 4 even though
the outfielders had to wade water.
I’m telling you all of this to let
you know how great a place
Millen is to live, and how people
in the community will pull to
gether to make things happen. I
would like to thank all those who
helped us that day because with
out you I don’t know how we
would have been able to play ball
on Friday or to have opening day.
So again, thank you, from the rec
reation department.
Our opening day ceremonies
began at 9 a.m. with the introduc
tions of the Jenkins County Rec
reation Board Members: Chair
man, Horace Weathersby; Vice
Chairman, Lisa Birdwell; Secre
tary, Don Gay; SR. Board mem
bers Joe Sasser, Tony Taylor,
Myrtis Reese and Joan Brown; the
employees Lisa Dailey, Director;
Ann Saxon, Administrator Assis
tant; and James (Bear) Walton,
Grounds and Maintenance.
Also attending the ceremony
was county commissioners, Floyd
Chance and Pam Dwight. The
teams then paraded onto the field
as Ms. Christy Bandy introduced
them. We have 22 teams this year
with the Midget, Jr. Gills and Jr.
Boys to start playing at a later date.
We had the honor of the VFW Post
presenting the colors for us. Then
Joe Sasser lead us in the pledge of
allegiance of the flag followed by
the National Anthem. Floyd
Chance threw out the first ball of
the season. Then Ms. Christy
Bandy said the words we had
waited for all winter (Play Ball).
In closing, I would like to ac
knowledge the following people
for making our opening day a big
success: Ms. Christy Bandy, Ray
Garvin, Elbert Burke, The Shirt
Shack, sponsors, parents, coaches,
Clay Boulineau, Grady Lane, all
the scorekeepers, concession
workers, umpires, board members,
Carter’s Rock-n-Ride, Wendell
Clark and Matt Brinson. I hope we
are off to a great season.
