GCSA celebrates the 39 th
Annual Leadership Conference
The Georgia Career Student
Association held their 39th An
nual Leadership Conference
April 2 - 4 on Jekyll Island. The
conference attendees were
wowed by their state officers who
led “Team GCSA” to another vic
tory!
GCSA was fortunate to have
Dr. Shelly Stewart of The Mattie
C. Stewart Foundation on Thurs
day evening to address the stu
dents. Dr. Stewart spoke about
how he overcame great obstacles
in his life through the power of
education. He was told early in
life by a teacher, “Learn to read,
get an education and you can be
anything you want to be.” Dr.
Stewart's rise to prominence be
gan as a radio personality in the
1950s and ‘60s. His expansion
into marketing also began in the
1960s, culminating in his position
as the President and CEO of
ideas, one of the country's long
est-running and largest privately
held corporate communication
companies. Dr. Stewart inspired
the crowd, students and adults, to
be the vest they can be and learn
to read. He was a powerful, in
spiring and entertaining speaker.
On Friday, the students had the
opportunity to see The Choice
Bus. The Choice Bus is a tool cre
ated by The Mattie C. Stewart
Foundation for the purpose of
extending the learning experience
of the InsideOut documentary
outside the classroom and keep
ing students on the road to a good
education. This experience-based
learning tool contains a “real” jail
cell connected to an interactive
learning environment. Students
also competed in the 42 competi
tive events and attended the An
nual Awards Program. Porshea
Cooper bid farewell as the 2008-
2009 GCSA State Secretary.
Attending the conference from
Jenkins County High School
(JCHS) were: Barbara Watson,
Most Improved Young Lady - 5 th
place; Shante Bynes, First Aid/
CPR - 6 th place; Shardavia Green,
Career Manual Portfolio - 2 nd
place; Crystal Daughtry, Career
Exploration Manual - 3 rd place;
Courtney Johnson, Healthcare
Science Technology - 2 nd place;
Porshea Cooper, Applied Com
munications - 3 rd place; Patricia
Milton, Leadership Development
- 5 th place; Lashonda Kelsey, and
Childcare Development - Honor
able Mention. Sashe Foster rep
resented JCHS in the Chapter of
the Year category receiving an
excellent rating. Delegates were
Marshella Herrington and Gussie
Lee. Marquis Moody served as
voting delegate.
One of the highlights of the
evening was Porshea Cooper
winning the Children’s
Healthcare of Atlanta Occupa
tional Scholarship in the amount
of $500. She also was one of the
recipients of the Georgia Career
Student Association Outstanding
Senior Scholarship for $300.
Although the evening ended
with a weather front that brought
torrential rainfall to the Island, the
conference attendees departed
knowing that a bright future was
possible for each of them. Also
attending the conference were
Lottie Walker, Sandra Murray,
Lillie Lee and Rosa Holley who
served as chaperones. CSA Ad
visor, Ms. Annette Cobb, would
like to thank everyone for sup
porting JCHS CSA.
