The Millen News, Wednesday, May 6, 2009 — Page 3 Azalea Garden Club makes donation The Azalea Garden Club contributed $100 to help with the purchase of the new swings at the Millen Commu nity House park. The club has also applied for a matching grant from the Garden Clubs of Georgia, Inc. Com munity Beautification Funds and, if received, will present these monies to Better Hometown also. The Garden Clubs of Georgia, Inc. and their member clubs throughout the state support Conservation, Beautification, and Education issues. Delay of Millen was one of fifteen students, resi dents and faculty members in the Medical College of Georgia who were inducted into the Georgia Chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society April 23. He is the son of Ken and Angela Delay of Millen. Alpha Omega Alpha is the only national honor society for medicine in the United States. Founded in 1902, the society fosters honesty and higher ideals of scholastic achievement. Dr. Joseph P. Bailey, School of Medicine professor emeritus of rheumatology, was the guest speaker at the ceremony which was held at the School of Dentistry. Jenkins, Brianna Joiner, Laquanta Jones, Darrion Kelly, Kendrick Mobley, Hayley Newton, Becca Rich, Jeremy Shumake, Kyleigh Spidle, Hannah Taylor, Crisalyn Walker and Jaquet Watkins. 11 th Grade: B reanna Adams, Keith Anthony, Shelby Burke, Greg Cooper, Hite qualifies for world duathlon Jim Hite qualified for the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Duathlon (run- bike-run) Championship in September with his fourth place age-group (75-79) fin ish at the USA Triathlon (USAT) Duathlon National Championship on April 26 in Richmond, Va. Hite completed the 10 kilo meter run/38 kilometer bike/ five kilometer run (6.2 mile/ 24 mile/3.1 mile) event in a time of three hours, 27 min utes, and 51 seconds over a hilly, multi-loop downtown course along the James River. Temperatures were in the low 70s at the 7:30 a.m. start of his wave and were nearing 90 degrees at the finish. Some 1,200 athletes from across the country took part in the two-day event which included youth and profes sionals as well as the age groupers. The world championship is scheduled for the last week end of September in Concord, N. C., with the Lowe’s Motor Speedway serving as the start, finish, and transition area. Athletes from some 80 coun tries are expected to take part. Millen native graduates from UGA Millen native Sabrina Riles will graduate Saturday, May 9, from the University of Georgia (UGA) with a masters of arts in Political Science. Riles, who was valedictorian of the Jenkins County High School class of 2003, has been working as a teaching assistant for a de partment at the UGA while pur suing her specialization in Law and Courts. Upon graduating, she plans to remain at UGA as she pursues her doctor of philosophy in Public Administration (DPA), specializing in Local Government Administration. During her tenure in the DPA program, Riles will work at the Carl Vinson Institute of Govern ment under the direction of Dr. Stephen Condrey. She is the daughter of Capus Riles Jr. and Bernice Riles, and has one sister, Samantha Riles, all of Millen. SABRINA RILES Students win big in the stock market The gifted education students at Jenkins County Middle School (JCMS) participated in the Stock Market Game, sponsored by the Georgia Council on Economic Education. The Stock Market game is a simulated stock market game. Each team of students is given a hypothetical portfolio of $100,000 to invest in the actual stock market. The students re search publicly traded companies and watch for market trends. This year, the Stock Slingerz of JCMS, did an exceptional job earning a profit of nearly 10% during these perilous economic times.
