Opinions, yours and ours
The Chatter Box
By Deborah Bennett
It is hard for me to believe that a year has passed since the death of
Frank Edenfield on May 2,2008. He was just one of those folks that
I expected to be around forever, and certain things just don’t seem
the same without him. I still miss him in a lot of little ways.
I miss getting his mail out of the post office box that he used. I
miss doing his bills, making his bank deposits and typing his occa
sional letters to his Navy buddies. I miss going to his office at the old
Millen News building and finding him sitting half-asleep at his desk.
I miss buying him a Christmas present and wishing him a happy
birthday. I even miss working on his ship’s annual reunion material
- never expected to miss that.
Frank was a unique individual who was fiercely loyal to those he
considered his friends, and I think I miss that most of all. A friend
cannot be replaced when they’re gone - just missed and remem
bered.
An e-mail buddy sent me the following little “trick.” I thought it
was fun. Try it and see what you think. I can’t help but wonder who
had the time to sit around and come up with this!
“Your age by Chocolate Math”
“First, pick the number of times a week that you would like to
have chocolate, more than once but less than 10. Multiply this num
ber by two, add five, multiply it by 50 (get the calculator). If you
have already had your birthday this year, add 1759. If you haven’t,
add 1758. Now, subtract the four digit year that you were bom. You
should have a three digit number. The first digit of this is your origi
nal number (how many times you want to have chocolate). The next
two digits are your age. This is the only year, 2009, that this will ever
work.”

BILLBOARDS AND SCENERY
Have you ever had the experience of noticing something that
isn’t there?
The obvious answer is “yes,” since I’m sure it’s happened to
all of us. It’s something that takes a bit of time to register on
one’s consciousness, but it definitely happens.
A couple of weeks ago, Joyce and I drove to Richmond, Vir
ginia, going up via 1-95 and returning by 1-85. Along both
interstates we were inundated with hundreds upon hundreds of
billboards providing information on fuel, lodging, food, insur
ance, legal help, and dozens of other businesses.
However, when we crossed into Virginia, they disappeared.
At least, until we reached the city limits of Emporia where they
returned with a vengeance! After that, when city limits included
the interstate as in Petersburg and Richmond, the array of ad
vertising was like everywhere else.
On our return, we turned onto 1-85 at Petersburg and were in
the rural countryside as we drove toward North Carolina. Tall
pines filled the median and lined the shoulder of the highway
for miles with not a billboard in sight. Only the small state-
approved signs for fuel, food, and lodging in the mile before
an exit were in sight, making for beautiful and uncluttered seen-
Millen named
Tree City USA by
Arbor Foundation
Millen has been named a Tree City USA community by the
Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to community
forestry.
It is the ninth year Millen has received this national recogni
tion.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day
foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State
Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
Millen has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA
community: having a tree board or department, a tree care ordi
nance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an
Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

ery that was a pleasure to behold.
That serenity ended at the state line.
We had noticed this in previous drives through Virginia and
wondered how it could happen. Obviously there is a loss of
revenue for the state and local communities. Businesses that
rely on billboards to get out the word lose out.
And advertising businesses lose as well. Had there been such
a ban in Georgia, we may not have CNN, TBS, nor the cable
stations formerly owned by Ted Turner, nor even Turner Field
or the Braves. Most of you remember that Turner was the name
along the bottom of just about every billboard in the state.
In a way, this could be seen as unfair interference by govern
ment in the free enterprise system. And you can be sure that, as
a couple that travels thousands of miles annually on the high
ways of our country, we use billboards to locate places to eat,
refuel, and spend the night.
But we must admit. A few hours driving among tall pines
with no barriers to the beautiful scenery provide a treasured
experience.
Congratulations Dawson!
We are so
proud of you!
