VOL. 105, NO. 44, MAY 20, 2009 LEGAL ORGAN OF JENKINS COUNTY MILLEN, GEORGIA • 75 CENTS Suspect caught in high-speed chase By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor An attempted routine traffic stop Wednesday, May 13, on U.S. High way 25 North by a trooper of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Post, Sylvania, quickly turned into a high speed chase through the City of Millen as the driver attempted to elude the trooper. Napoleon Maurice Phillips, 18, of Vandivere Road, Augusta, was arrested and charged with speeding 101 in a 55 mile per hour zone, felony fleeing/at tempting to elude an officer, criminal damage to property- first degree, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, hit and run, disobedience to an of ficer and false imprisonment. The GSP trooper, Millen Po lice Department officers, Jenkins County Sheriff’s De partment deputies and an addi tional GSP trooper all attempted to stop the vehicle as it entered the city, traveling south on U.S. Highway 25. The suspect ve hicle struck three other vehicles as it attempted to flee law en forcement through the city. Phillips eventually lost control of his vehicle near McTeer Food and Fuel on U.S. Highway 25 South and struck a telephone pole. The vehicle came to a stop, facing north, on the highway. Phillips jumped from the ve hicle and ran behind McTeer’s where he grabbed a bystander standing in front of a nearby garage. The bystander was able to break free, and the suspect ran into a wooded area. Faw en forcement began a manhunt, and the suspect was quickly ar rested nearby without incident by a Department of Natural Re sources Ranger. Phillips is being held in the Jenkins County Jail pending bond. He also has a warrant with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office for credit card fraud. NAPOLEON MAURICE PHILLIPS ft! (Staff photo by Deborah Bennett) Boone, Joyner named JCHS Valedictorian, Salutatorian By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor Top honors of the Jenkins County High School Class of 2009 go to Sheila Marie Boone, valedictorian, and Chester Jeffery Joyner, salutatorian. Sheila is the daughter of Bob and Donna Boone. Her academic honors include Governor’s Honor nominee. Merit Scholar, Washington Youth Tour delegate, Rochester Scholarship-history and multiple highest average awards. During her high school career, she has been an active mem ber of the Interact Club, grades 10-12, serving as treasurer while in the 12 th grade; Beta club, 11-12 grades, serving as secretary while in the 12 th grade; and yearbook staff, 9-12 grades, serv ing as editor-in-chief her 12 th grade. Sheila plans to attend Georgia Southern University (GSU) and major in history. She plans to obtain a PhD degree in his tory and become a college professor. Chester is the son of Jeff and Judy Joyner. His academic accomplishments include: Bausch and Fomb Science Award, 2007 Governor’s Honor Program finalist in bi ology, 2009 STAR student, full time ACCEF student for IV2 years at GSU in the Honor’s Program, ASPIRES undergradu ate research grant through GSU, President’s List for three se mesters, University Honors Program Scholarship recipient, multiple highest average awards, Georgia Certificate of Merit Sheila Boone, valedictorian, and Chester Joyner, salutatorian, Jenkins County High School Class of 2009 (Staff photo by Deborah Bennett) Scholar, Augusta State Certificate of Achievement and 2009 Mr. Eagle. He has been an active member of the Interact Club, serving as vice-president for two years; Spanish Club, 2008 GSU Idol competition. West Millen Baptist Church youth and USHA. Chester plans to continue his education at GSU in the Honor’s Program and graduate with a B.S. in biology. He then plans to attend medical school to become a trauma surgeon. War Memorial Dedication to be held May 25 The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #2776 will host a dedication program for the War Memorial recently placed by the post on the lawn of the Jenkins County Courthouse. The program will be held 2 p.m. Memorial Day, May 25, with Gen. Carlton Fulford USMC (Ret), a Jenkins County native, as the featured speaker. Other dignitaries scheduled to appear on the program in clude: City of Millen Mayor King Rocker, Lt. Gen. David Poythress, State Senator J.B. Powell, State Representative Jon Burns, Nancy Bobbitt of U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson’s office and U.S. Congressman John Barrow. All Jenkins County residents are encouraged to attend the program, particularly those residents who are family members of the deceased military named on the monument. Fam ily members will be seated in a desig nated area and presented with a patri otic ribbon identifying them as surviv ing family members. Those listed on the monument are: World War I - Frank Burke, Daniel W. Hendley, Grover McGlohorn and Albert Parker; World War II - Charles E. Ander- son, Robert M. Sheila Marie Boone, valedicto rian, daughter of Bob and Donna Boone, plans to attend Georgia Southern University, majoring in history. Chester Jeffery Joyner, salutatorian, son of Jeff and Judy Joyner, currently attends Georgia Southern University where he plans to obtain a bachelor of sci ence degree in biology and then attend medical school. Rebecca Leigh Rich, daughter of Don and Cindy Rich, plans to attend Georgia Southern University in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and then attend the University of Georgia to become a pharmacist. Breonna Smart, daughter of Deloris Smart and Rosa Lee Sampson, will attend Georgia State University majoring in biol ogy and seeking a minor in phi losophy.
