Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Interment will be in the Elam Baptist Church Cemetery in
Jenkins County.
Mrs. Newton was a native and lifelong resident of Statesboro.
She was born October 11, 1924, the youngest child of the late
James Gordon Groover and Roxie Kerby Groover. She was wel
comed to Heaven by her beloved husband of 52 years, John
Wendell Newton. She was also preceded in death by her first
husband, Rufus L. (Sid) Jones, her sisters, Ruth G. Clark and
Bessie G. Burke, and her brother James E. (Jimmie) Groover.
Mrs. Newton graduated in 1941 from Georgia Teacher’s Col
lege (Marvin Pittman) High School and went on to earn her teach
ing degree from Georgia Teacher’s College, now Georgia South
ern University. She devoted her life’s work to her chosen profes
sion of teaching. She found great joy and reward in teaching and
was loved and respected by the many hundreds of boys and girls
she taught. She began her 40 year teaching career at the age of
18 at Middleground School. She also taught in Register, and re
tired from Portal Elementary School in 1985. After her retire
ment, she continued to touch young lives and form new teaching
friendships as a substitute teacher for more than 15 years. She
was a member of the Bulloch County Retired Educators Asso
ciation, the Georgia Retired Educators Association and the Geor
gia Association of Educators.
Mrs. Newton was an active member of Gracewood Baptist
Church in Statesboro for over 45 years, and was the longest-
term member of the church. She loved her church and her church
family and served in many capacities. She was the Sunday School
Secretary for many years, and was a member of the Young at
Heart group and the Women on Mission. She was also a former
Sunday School teacher and member of the choir. She was known
for her excellent cooking and enjoyed sharing it at any church
occasion.
“Mrs. Mildred’’, as she was affectionately known by most who
knew and loved her, was the true example of a virtuous woman
described in Proverbs 31. She was a gracious lady, always ready
with a warm, lovely smile or word of encouragement. She was a
woman of strong faith and love who instilled those ideals in her
children and grandchildren, both by word and example. She loved
all of her family dearly and demonstrated it to them daily. She
was a true friend and encourager, sharing her loved one’s joys
and sorrows, and always willing to share or lend a helping hand.
She was proud to be a farmer’s wife and enjoyed sharing the
fruits of their labor. She loved reading and working with her
flowers. She was “MeMe’’ not only to her own grandchildren,
but to countless other young people she loved as her “adopted”
children and grandchildren.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Walt
Lamb, of Statesboro, and Dianne and Gil Shaw of Oakland, Cal.;
a son and daughter-in-law, David and Brenda Newton, of
Garfield; five grandsons, Jonathan Lamb, Brett Lamb, Jordan
Lamb, Matthew Newton and Bryce Lamb; a granddaughter and

Wrestling with the Word
The Bible is alive and interactive - interpreting its readers at the same time that they are
interpreting it. We cannot avoid interpreting the Bible as we read it. Most of the books of
the Bible are over two-thousand years old, and since historical and cultural circumstances
were very different in Biblical times, it requires careful study to know what to make of
many of the stories contained in the Bible. But as we read the Bible, it informs us of our
own life, interpreting us, as it were, at the same time that we are interpreting it. As we
read, there is interaction between us and God, where God is interpreting our life
z'i/\\ through the word. Sometimes we read a passage and are immediately struck by the
fact that we fall short in some way. While at other times we might read a passage, but
it only slowly dawn on us that there is room for spiritual growth. Thus, the Word of God is
alive within us, interpreting and creating us as we interact with it. As the Danish philoso
pher Soren Kierkegaard noted, “When you read God’s word, you must constantly be
saying to yourself ‘It is talking to me, and about me’.” We should not read the Bible pas
sively, as if it is merely something to be learned. We must read it actively, becoming
engaged with, and wrestling with, God’s word.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and
marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. R.S.V. Hebrews 4:12
