South American fish caught
Ronnie Newton displays what he believes to be a Black Pacu fish which his mother, Flora Mae
Newton caught in a local pond. It is unknown how the fish, which is native to South America,
got in the pond. Pacu are related to piranha but are not considered piranha. They are a vegetar
ian version and are cousins in a sense. They have teeth that could resemble a piranha and will
eat other fish. However, they are much more docile. (Staff photo by Deborah Bennett)
Correction
The group hosting the Centennial Observance of the Confederate Monument on the courthouse
square is the United Daughters of the Confederacy or “UDC”, not the “DAR.” The initials were
misprinted in a Datebook headline appearing in last week’s edition. The Millen News regrets the
error.
