Minimum wage increases to $7.25
By Deborah Bennett
Millen News Editor
Some workers may notice a
slight increase in their pay-
checks this week, thanks an in
crease in the federal minimum
wage that went into effect Fri
day, July 24. The increase
from $6.55 to $7.25 per hour
amounts to $28 weekly for
those working the standard 40-
hour work week.
This was the last of a three-
step increase in the minimum
wage that began in July 2007.
Minimum wage at that time in
creased from the $5.15 per
hour, established in 1997, to
$5.85 per hour. In July 2008,
the minimum wage increased
to $6.55 per hour.
The Minimum Wage Act
was passed in 1938 and a mini
mum wage rate of 28 cents
was established. Increases fol
lowed through the years so
that by Jan. 1, 1978, the rate
was $2.65 per hour and $4.95
by Jan. 1, 1991. It was in
creased to $5.15 per hour in
1997, and was not raised again
until 2007.
