Jennifer Wiggins attends GSNHSW Convention
The Georgia Society for Nurs
ing Home Social Workers
(GSNHSW) held its annual con
vention July 12-15 in Savannah
with the East Central Council as
the host for the event. Jennifer O.
Wiggins, president of East Central
Council, and social director at
Bethany Nursing Center was
present for the convention.
The convention began on Sun
day with registration and fellow
ship and then the following three
days were filled with education,
fun and new ideas for the upcom
ing year. Education ranged from
dealing with Behaviors with nurs
ing home residents, Alzheimer’s,
Dementia, Voting with Nursing
Home Residents, Home Care Ser
vices and the drastic, everyday
changes that occur within the nurs
ing home, from finances to emo
tional stress on staff and Residents.
The social workers were very for
tunate to have Mrs. Teepa Snow,
from North Carolina, an expert in
then opinion, on Alzheimer’s and
dementia patients; she has had
hands-on training and experiences
with residents with this diagnosis.
There were close to 135 Nurs
ing Home Social Workers, from
throughout the state of Georgia in
attendance. The East Central
Council Members worked very
hard and came together as a “True
Team” and family. Regina Bell,
administrator, and Evie Wiggins,
assistant administrator, of the
Bethany Nursing Center of Millen,
has allowed Mrs. Wiggins to par
ticipate with the East Central
Council, GSNHSW Board meet
ings and the conventions, which
furthers her knowledge of nursing
home procedures, care, etc. Lisa
Frawley, activity/social assistant,
at Bethany, also assisted Mrs.
Wiggins with a few details before
the convention. The GSNHSW
board members were also very
helpful in planning for the conven
tion, which brings fellow social
workers closer together.
Mrs. Wiggins’ father, Charles
Oliver, donated Augusta Sports
wear bags, for each social worker
to receive as a goody bag for at
tending. Sponsors, groups, com
panies, hospitals and individuals
from throughout the state of Geor
gia, helped make the convention
a success by contributions. Jenni
fer acknowledges the residents at
the Bethany Nursing Center of
Millen for letting her be a part of
then life. She holds a special place
in her heart for each one of them.
The education, training, etc. that
she participates in is done for the
residents of her facility, so they can
continue to get the best care, they
all so truly deserve.
“So much of what you hear is
all of the ‘bad’ about nursing
homes, but each and every person ties air willing to go far and be-
should walk a day in one of our yond for then residents. We invite
residents or staff member’s shoes, you within the community, to visit
the ‘bad’ thoughts that occur when our facilities and spend some time
you think about nursing homes, with our residents and staff. I don’t
will truly change. Not only the think any of you would leave with
social workers at the facilities, try nothing less than a heart full of joy
to broaden their horizons, but ev- for our disabled and elderly,” said
ery department within the facili- Mrs. Wiggins.
