Church News
Elizabeth Daniel, 98, of
Millen died July 28
Mrs. Elizabeth Newton Daniel. 98, of Millen died Tuesday,
July 28, 2009 at Jenkins County Hospital.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday.
July 31.2009 at the Millen Baptist Church with
the Revs. David Wheeler and Maurice Crowder
officiating. Burial was in the Millen Cemetery.
Mrs. Daniel was born January 26, 1911 in
Jenkins County. She was a homemaker, mem
ber of the Millen Baptist Church and a charter
member of the Azalea Garden Club.
She graduated in 1929 from the Georgia
Normal School and attended Georgia State
College for Women in Milledgeville. She taught
school prior to joining her husband in their retail business.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Billy
Daniel, and her son, Jim Daniel.
She is survived by her daughter, Jane D. Johnson of Millen;
two sons, Julian W. (Betty) Daniel of Sylvania and Norman (Char
lotte) Daniel of Hermosa Beach, Cal.; daughter-in-law, Lynda
Daniel of Millen; 10 grandchildren, Julie Howie, Jack Daniel,
Joel Daniel, John Daniel, Janice Daniel, Chris Johnson, Caroline
Brainard, Beth Sexson, Geoffrey Daniel and Rebekah Daniel;
and 15 great-grandchildren.
Active Pallbearers were deacons of the Millen Baptist Church.
Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Faithfull Workers
Sunday School Class.

Open House and Bass Tournament to be
held at Bo Ginn Aquarium
The Jenkins County Development Authority (JCDA) is spon
soring an Open House and Bass Tournament to benefit the Bo
Ginn Aquarium at

Bryan Clees, an award winning singer/songwriter will be the
main attraction for the evening. Clees is a Tampa, Fla. native
who now resides in Sylvania. Clees is scheduled to perform from
7-9 p.m.
Recreation Department updates
The Jenkins County Recreation Department is currently hold
ing registration for football, ages 4-13, and soccer, ages 4-17. To
register, come by the department during regular office hours to
sign up. A birth certificate is required at the time of registration.
The deadline for registering is Friday, Aug. 14.
Anyone desiring to coach football or soccer should come by
the department and fill out a coaches’ application. All coaches
are required to have a background check. The deadline for ap
plying is Friday, Aug. 14.

Women’s Day
First Baptist Church will hold its annual Men and Women’s
Day services Sunday, Aug. 9. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m.
and the morning worship service at 11:15 a.m.

conservation workshop
The 48 th annual Natural Re
sources Conservation Workshop
was held June 7- 11 at Abraham
Baldwin Agricultural College in
Tifton. The Workshop has gradu
ated approximately 11,519 partici
pants over the years and was en
joyed this year by 109 Georgia
high school students including 10
students from the U.S. Virgin Is
lands along with two chaperones.
Students came from throughout
Georgia and attended the week’s
activities of field trips and class
room functions with opportunities
to earn college scholarships at the
end of the week.
The tuition of most students was
sponsored locally by businesses
and organizations through the lo
cal Soil and Water Conservation
Districts. Krista Gay, Mason
Davis, Krysten Fail and Chassity
Wilkerson attended this year’s
Workshop and were sponsored by
the Natural Resources Conserva
tion Service through the Brier
Creek Soil and Water Conserva
tion District. Local Soil and Water
Conservation District Supervisors
in Jenkins County are Elbeit Burke
and John Thomas Herrington.
Workshop Director, Dennis
Brooks said, “This is an excellent
opportunity for high school stu
dents interested in our environ
ment and natural resources. Stu
dents learn the importance of con
serving our natural resources and
the vital role these resources play
in our daily life and for generations
to come. Many students make
decisions toward a career or area
of study in college because of then-
involvement in this Workshop.”
Instruction and hands-on activities
were led by professionals from
Georgia Forestry Commission,
Georgia Department of Natural
Resources, University of Georgia
Cooperative Extension Service,
USDA-Natural Resources Conser
vation Service, and the Georgia
Mining Association. Twelve dif
ferent core subjects were covered:
Wildlife Law Enforcement, Wild
life Management, Soil Conserva
tion, Backyard Conservation,
Georgia Coastal Resources, Fish
eries Management, Conservation
Engineering, Understanding Soils,
Rediscovering Georgia’s Water
Resources, Forest Protection, For
est Management, and Mining/
Conservation.
Quizzes were given on the last
day of the workshop which cov
ered the core subjects. Thirteen
college scholarships worth
$ 18,200 along with $425 cash and
plaques were given to students
with the highest scores. Scholar
